Common problems for INSTANT INK, HP+ PLANS: INK AND TONER
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Instant Ink. Check out this link: HP INSTANT INK, HP+ PLANS: INK AND TONER. .
HP Recommended

We subscribed to Instant Ink for years, but our low print volume does not justify the cost. We received many cartridges during that time that are unused You have your phone with you OK, so I discontinued our subscription. Now we are unable to print anything because we are getting a message saying “the indicated cartridges cannot be used until the printer is enrolled in HP instant Ink”. We have paid for these cartridges through the program and cannot afford for them to go to waste. Help?

Hi @angivan

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I hear your frustration—this situation feels unfair, but unfortunately it’s working exactly as HP designed Instant Ink. Here’s the key detail:

Why Your Cartridges Don’t Work After Cancellation

  • Instant Ink cartridges: When you enroll in HP Instant Ink, you pay a monthly fee to print a defined number of pages per month and not on how many ink cartridges you used.

  • When you cancel, You can continue printing with Instant Ink supplies until the end of your current billing cycle.
At the end of the billing cycle, you must remove Instant Ink cartridges and purchase Original HP Ink or Toner directly from the retailer of your choice to continue printing. Instant Ink cartridges only work in enrolled printers.

After you cancel, you must finish the billing cycle.

Instant Ink does not prorate billing cycles if you decide to cancel.

If you cancel your Instant Ink service, you can print with Instant Ink cartridges until the end of the billing cycle.

At the end of the billing cycle, you receive your final bill and the Instant Ink cartridges stop working and should be returned to HP.

Please install store-bought HP original ink cartridge.

Subscription cartridges or generic (non-hp) cartridges will not function in your printer now that the service is cancelled.
