My printer will only print photos in black and white (or grayscale). How do I make it print photos in color?

Hi @ettenib,
Thank you for joining HP Forums! I read your post about the photo printing issues on your HP Envy 4520 printer. Don't worry we'll work together to find a solution for you.
To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:
Have you recently made any changes on the printer before the issue started?
Did you check the print settings?
Are you able to make a copy from the printer?
In the meantime, let's try these steps here:
Perform a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.
Remove all the ink cartridges and then try to perform a hard reset on the printer.
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Remove USB cable, if present.
Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.
Now insert the ink cartridges and then try to print a test page and check if it works.
I believe the issue is in the print settings itself. Please follow the below mentioned steps and check:
- Go to control panel – Devices and printers – Give a right click on Envy 4520 and select printing preferences.
- In the pop-up window, click on “Advanced” button - check for printing in grayscale option. Make sure it is turned off.
- Also once you try to print a document please go to printer properties to make sure it is not set in “print in greyscale” option.
For more assistance, please follow this link: HP Printers - Printing Photos (Windows)
If the above steps did not resolve the issue, it could be an issue with the printer drivers. In that case, we might need to uninstall the drivers and re-install the same.
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'
6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13 ). Restart the PC
14 ). Now click on this link: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL61220/mp-147799-1/EN4520_Full_WebPack_1122.exe and download and install the updated printer drivers
15 ). Connect the USB cable only when prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.
I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes for further assistance.
Feel free to post your query for any other assistance as well,
It's been a pleasure interacting with you and I hope you have a good day ahead.

Jeet,
Thanks for your reply. I finally solved the problem, accidentally. Windows 10 did an update and the problem was solved! I think the problem started when I downloaded new firmware from the HP website in an attempt to fix a paper size issue (I was trying to print on a 4x6 card, but I kept getting a message stating the printer sensor did not sense a 4x6 card). I followed all the steps on the HP website to fix the size issue, but once the size issue was fixed, I was unable to print photos in color, although I could still print documents in color. Apparently the Windows 10 update fixed the problem.
Thanks again,
Mark
