Greetings!
Welcome to the HP Community. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries. I have reviewed your post and I understand, you are trying to change the tray settings.
Don't worry, I'm here to help! Let's try these steps -
1. Make sure the printer is turned on.
2. Touch (right arrow), touch Setup, touch Preferences and then select the Default Tray or Tray Lock.
3. Click OK or Apply after changing the desired tray settings.
You may also refer to "Paper type, size, and input tray settings" from this link.
Let me know how that goes.
To thank us for our efforts to help you, click here to access your public post and Select - "Accept as solution" and click on the purple "Thumbs up".
Have a great day!

Thanks for getting back to us. You can set tray 1 to print plain paper but if you want tray 2 to print checks, you will need to manually select tray 2 and then select the paper type.
Have a great day!
