the printer is always identifying paper size as letter although all settings are put on A4 both default and tray1, it insists that the paper available is letter size. I even updated its software and restored default settings before resetting the paper size to A4 again but in vain. How to solve this problem?

Just to clarify, if you print a config page, does the paper size shown there indicate that paper is letter or A4?  Are the driver defaults on the system set for letter by any chance? Are you using the HP print drivers or the Microsoft Class drivers? You do not list your printer, but if your printer is compatible with the HP UPD driver, try that. To make sure that the printer is properly defaulted to A4, on your PC, go to control panel>devices and printers>right click icon for your printer and select printer properties>click the advanced tab>click printing defaults> and make sure that default paper type set here is the A4 you want as default.
