HP 5100 DTN
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

7-8 workstations using this printer. (A mix of Win 7 and 10) After an undetermined amount of time the workstations show the printer as offline, when in fact the printer says it is online. Power cycling the printer appears to correct the connection problem temporarily.

Is this a Powersave issue?

Are there special settings that need to be configured under ports?

I appreciate any help with this.

Almost certain you have  a failing jet direct network card. Is it a 615N by any chance? If so, find yourself a 620N and you will be back in business. Ebay should be a good source.

Is control panel responsive in this state, if not then possibly the formatter is bad. Are you able to ping the printer when it is showing as offline? If not then likely the network card is failing.

The control panel on the printer? If so, yes.

I did find that I was unable to log into the printer using it's IP. A restart of the printer allowed me in.

How can I determine which is installed? I looked through the config page and don't see it.

Is the 615 an older version that had problems?

HP Recommended

It says "EIO 1:   HP JetDirect J4169A"

According to google that is a 610N

You feel certain that is the issue and not a port configuration error?

HP Recommended

Unless your network switch gear is not compatible. Keep in mind that the 610 card could be up to 18 years old.

I'll give it a shot for 15 bucks. Already ordered.

I'll let you know what happens.

Got the 620n.

Installed it.

I re-ran the printer config. The config shows the new card and a new ip address.

Absolutely nothing can see the printer. I finally put the old card back in and it worked right away.

Are you sure the 620n works with a 5100 dtn?

HP Recommended

Absolutely, I have run it. Install the new card and perform a cold reset to ensure previous owner's configuration is cleared. Also ensure that the current firmware for the 620n is installed.  HP download manager is the easiest way to upgrade jet direct cards.
