macOS 10.13 High Sierra

Hi,

I recently installed a new firmware for my printer as well as installing HP utility on a windows 7 PC on the same network, in addition to the High Sierra OSX that used to control the printer.

Ever since, the scanning function no longer works - every time I try to scan, it gives me a 76 Service Error and asks me to restart the printer. Doing so doesn't solve the problem, I keep on getting the error whenever I try to scan to a network folder. It DOES scan to a USB without problems though.

Is this caused by the new firmware or the installation of HP utility to an additional computer? Help would be greatly appreciated!

@Crobot

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Forums.

I came across your post and would like to assist.

I understand that you have an HP LaserJet Pro 200 color MFP M276n. I read that post upgrading the firmware, the printer is unable to scan and  gives a 76 Service Error and asks to restart the printer. The HP utility was installed on a Windows 7 PC on the same network, in addition to the High Sierra OSX that used to control the printer. You're able to scan successfully through a USB connection.

To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this:

  • Is the printer able to print successfully when connected to wifi or does it give the 76 Service Error?
  • Does the 76 Service Error appear on the printer's screen or the computer?
  • Is the scanning fine from the computer application?

While you respond to that. I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Let the printer be connected over the wifi.
  • Remove the printer queue from the list of printers, and then add it again. Doing so creates a new printing session.

  • Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.

  • In the Printers list, click your HP printer, and then click the Minus button () to delete it.

  • Click the Add button ().

  • Find, and then select the name of your printer from the Printer list, and then click Add to add your printer. Do not select an HP Fax driver.

NOTE: If your printer does not display in the list, make sure the printer is connected, turned on, has power, and is ready to print.

Figure : Example of the printer selection list

Image: The Add window showing a selection of printers with one model selected.
  • Click the Use or Print Using... menu.

  • Select the AirPrint printer.

Your new printer queue displays in the Printers list in an Idle status .

  • Try printing ad scan again over the wifi.

Incase the issue persists then please setup the scan to network folder by following the detailed steps from this HP document: https://hp.care/2D241QR

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Keep me posted for further assistance.

Cheers! 🙂

Hi,

THanks for the reply. The error 76 only happens when I scan to a network folder - it does not happen when I print or scan to USB.

I've just tried testing the network path for scanning to a network folder and I've noticed that it doesn't work - which is strange because nothing has changed.

I've deleted the network folder and have set up a new one and that doesn't work either. The network folder is on a Mac with a fixed ip and the path details that I've put in is identical to how it was before a Windows 7 PC was installed with HP software to allow it to print.

Could the new installation of HP software on a Windows 7 PC be causing conflicts?

@Crobot,

I read this response. It is nice to hear from you again and thanks for the update.  Your time and patience are much appreciated. DIsplaying great technical prowess, immaculate attitude and a never say die spirit to try and resolve the issue is a virtue. Kudos to you for that. As MKazi is out for the day I am respond ing on his behalf.

For now, please try these steps:

  • Uninstall the old printer drivers first. Follow the steps mentioned here:http://hp.care/2cKwLyC
  • Now run the Apple Software Update. Check here for steps:http://hp.care/2cNgw3C
  • Restart your computer and printer.
  • Note resetting Mac printing system will cause the removal of all printers from the list.
  • Click the Apple menu icon, and then click “System Preferences”.
  • Click “Printers and Scanner” / “Print and Scan” or “Print and Fax”.
  • Right-click the blank space in the Printers list, and then click “Reset printing system”.
  • Click “Reset” in the confirmation window.
  • Enter an administrator username and password, and then click “OK”.
  • Wait until the printing system is reset and no devices show in the Printers list
  • Now, clickhttps://hp.care/2k5cCJL to download and install the printer driver.
  • In the “Add printer” window, make sure you add the printer as mentioned below:
  1. Click the “Add button” (+).
  2. Find, and select Apple Airprint from the list and then click “Add” to add Apple AirPrint.
  3. Click “Print Using...” or “Use”, and then select  AirPrint.

Now check if the issue gets fixed.

If the issue persists, then assign a static IP to the printer as suggested below:

  • Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to get the IP address.
  • Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  • Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
  • Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
  • Click on the radio button which says, “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
  • Click on radio button which says, “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)
  • Restart the printer and then router once done.

Hi,

Are you sure the error is a 76 Service Error ? The error is likely to be 79 Service Error. You can resolve the 79 Service Error by first clearing your Mac Print Queue and then updating the firmware on your printer.

You can follow this document to clear the print queue.

https://support.apple.com/kb/PH25223?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

This document will show how to update the firmware on the printer,

You can also reference this video. The fix is the same for the error message even if the video is not the exact same model.
