Thanks that's  helpful. I checked and I already have the latest firmware. I wonder if that's what broke it?

I also got an Engine Communication Error earlier (first time I've seen that). I hate to think this thing might be dying on me.

I updated the firmware from the service menu in the printer, and directly after that it started to give me the 79 error so I'm pretty sure it's the firmware that is causing the problem. Error 79 means firmware error (according to the HP staff I talked to).

The reason why I re-installed the firmware was to fix it if the installation got corrupted in the first place in some way, but it made no difference.

I tried to find a way to downgrade the firmware but I din't, and according to HP it is impossible. I doubt that, but you might risk to brick your printer if it fails.

In one post I read somewhere, they suggested to remove and set back the JetDirect Card to solve error 79. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wq6P8MZ_TVc

I really appreciate you sharing your experience with me. I'll try the JetDirect Card trick after work.

Unlike what was in that video, it doesn't appear that the JetDirect Card is easily removable on my printer.

Try this in https://www.reddit.com/r/printers/comments/jpgpp3/hp_laserjet_pro_m280_m281_printer_series_20200612/

to download old firmware and update to your printer.
