HP OfficeJet Pro 8740
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I cannot get my printer to print on heavy paper. I am using card stock type paper (Avery 8371), business card.

I have used almost all the setting on the printer itself as well as the driver settings from Windows. I have, also, mixed various settings. No luck!

Hello, @SeguinSoftware – Hope you are well 🙂

Welcome to the HP Forum! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips!

I understand that you are facing issues while printing on cardstock paper. To fix this issue, you need to make sure that your printing preferences under the actual printer and the program you are using are set to "cardstock". Follow the steps below:

  1. Go to Control panel – Devices and printers.
  2. Right-click on Officejet 8740 and select “Printing preferences”.
  3. Under the Paper/Quality tab, change your paper type to "Cardstock".
  4. Make sure to select the correct paper size as well.
  5. Now, come to the program that you are using to print the cardstock (MS Word, Wordpad e.tc.), and change the paper type to “Cardstock”.

NB: Load card stock in Tray 1 only. Card stock is not compatible for use with the ADF for single- or double-sided printing.

If the issue persists, then re-install the drivers and try to change the printing preferences.

  • Unplug the USB cable from the printer and computer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now click on http://hp.care/2pswtzA to download and install the printer drivers.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.

Those steps should do the trick, let me know the outcome!

Good luck 🙂

Hi @SeguinSoftware,

Thank you for replying,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

I understand you have followed the steps suggested and still having the issue, I would suggest here is to try creating a custom size and check if that helps. Here is the link.

I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes for further assistance.

Regards,

Although the hp OfficeJet Pro 8740 is rated for paper up to cardstock weight 220; this rating is for single sided paper only. The double-sided feature does not accommodate heavier weight paper, as the rollers involved differ in capacity.  You can experiment with lighter weights to determine the weight limit of your printer, but the short answer is, for two sided projects you need to print one side at a time.  Option: For smaller jobs, use the two-sided option, but only enter 1 copy each time.  If I'm making 10 double sided copies, I just choose the two-sided option and enter the job as 1 copy, ten times. Then you can go on to other things and the copies will be just fine.
