[...] I found that when I install a device as AirPrint (AirPrint printers so far haven't shown the problem) the associated ppd doesn't have the TTRasterizer attribute at all, thus defaulting to "*TTRasterizer: None" according to the documentation. So I assume globally setting "*TTRasterizer: None"  doesn't really hurt.

Another puzzle piece that fits the picture!

All the more I am disappointed about the level on incompetence and/or bureaucratic stall in HP and Apple to handle this. It has been found out months ago that AirPrint still works, so I would have expected someone in those great companies maybe would have been able to look at what differentiates those two paths to the printer, looooong ago!

But I suspect that layers of defence against users around the (tech) departments that would have had a clue are so many and so thick, that they did not even get to know there is a problem.

Sure it would be naive to assume HP driver developers would (or should) hang around in this forum. But if there's no communication path any more from business customers and their admins to people within HP (or Apple) that can understand such an issue and take action in less that 4 months time, I'd consider the support organisation as defunct 😞

I fully agree. That Apple and HP hasn't found this simple fix is utterly unbelivable when it is so logic and simple to find - if you know where to look.

Hey all...

After an insane amount of badgering, our HP rep was able to get us a copy of the "interim" FS4 firmware.

That has fixed our problem here will the swath of test documents -- without having to modify ppd files *or* use the 10.13.4 betas -- on our M<whatever> printers we tested here (specifically the M651 I have in my area...)

They still say "end of February" about this, so if you actually have an HP rep, you could maybe badger them as well.

Firmware bundle version 4.5.4

Firmware Revision:  2405400_026650

Firmware Datecode:  20180126

And, no, please do not ask me for a copy of this -- we can *not* distribute it.

The firmware version that Steve is referring to (FS 4.5.4) is now released and available from HP Tech Support (not currently a public release on HP.com).

Just to clarify, the version that isn't being released until the end of February is for printers running FutureSmart 3.x firmware.

I have exactly the same problem and cant obtain a resolution from HP or Apple.  This is insane.

THIS IS WHAT I GET:

ERROR: undefinedresult

OFFENDING COMMAND:  show

or

ERROR: undefinedresult

OFFENDING COMMAND:  xshow

Thank you very much Prints_William for this solution! Finally, I can print on my m553dn again... I've been following this thread in the hope a solution would be posted, and this has indeed resolved the problem for me (I modified the file at /etc/cups/ppd).

I'm EXTREMELY disappointed with HP Support, whom I contacted (via the institution where I work) on Feb. 7th. I referred them to this thread and to the fact that a firmware fix apparently already existed, but that it was not publicly available and had to be provided by them. After telling me they would look into it and get back to me, I never heard back from them -- not with the firmware update, and not with this ppd file modification (which you posted the day after I contacted HP Support, nearly a week ago!).

Truly shameful "support"...

Prints_William -  sensational fix thanks very much for sharing.  I have no concept of how you even know where to start to find this fix, but it's worked on our M553,  which was deeply frustrating us, and had it been summer, and the window open it would have been thrown out in anger.   It's a terrific printer, especially now that it can actually print something.

Thanks again for sharing.

@JCecB

Have you applied Prints_William's fix? See page 21 of this forum.

It helps.

Thanks @molavine and others for directing me to this answer. Not being an IT professional I can’t figure out the step by step needed to do this on a Mac. If someone can that would be brilliant.

@JCecB

From the Finder, select Go > Go to Folder...

Enter /etc/cups/ppd

In the folder that opens, you should see a .ppd file with the name of your printer -- open it in TextEdit

Look for the line *TTRasterizer: Type42

Change "Type42" to "None"

Save (you may need to enter an Admin password)
