problem solved here with my 553 printer.

Better late than never (although I prefer BEFORE, by testing the beta software with the printers for example as everyone usually does, take note HP...)

Just found the firmware 3.9.1 for HP Laserjet 500 color M551n. It was not there yesterday and there was no (not yet) "Routine Alert" as with previous updates. Amazing that it takes 2 weeks (shows March 1) to have this update online, seems to be a difficult task.

The download is very, very slow, although I use a high-performance access. Many people seem to download drivers, don't they? I just put this here to forward the information.

The Readme addresses the error. So the update will most probably solve the problem. If not, I shall be back in a few minutes when the download completed and the first tests.

Anyway, thank you HP! Problem probably solved, for M551, too.

What led you to believe 10.13.4 has a fix for a Postscript undefinedresult error?

In response to the inquiry as to "What led you to believe 10.13.4 has a fix for a Postscript undefinedresult error?".

The defect for the XSHOW error specifically was submitted to Apple and internal testing as well as customer feedback has shown that Apple included the fix in 10.13.4.

Apple might be able to provide the most detailed explanation of the fix....

...but in general macOS 10.13.4 has a fix in how the PostScript is rendered by the OS before sending it to the printer.  There was a discrepency with how font glyph tables were being generated that exposed an opportunity for better exception handling in the printer's PostScript interpreter.

Apple fixed the tables in macOS 10.13.4 and HP improved the exception handling in firmware.

The printer actually exits more gracefully and handles the exception with out a crash.

I hope this helps.

Hi @ironbadger, can you please edit your response so my name does not float above your response?

I'm getting screenshots of the body of your post, giving the false impression that I posted that information.

We opened a ticket with Apple to see if they ever suggested 10.13.4 fixes the postscript error, rather than rely on heresay on a public forum.

Can you provide your Apple ticket number as reference, if indeed they acknowledged 10.13.4 fixes the issue?

TIA,

Don

Ok, in fairness to @IronBadger, we just got confirmation from Apple Enterprise Customer Support Engineering that 10.13.4 does in fact contain a fix for the reported issue:

Hi Don,

Thank you for contacting AppleCare Enterprise Support. According to my research this issue should be present in macOS 10.13.3.

The macOS 10.13.4 (17E199) update contains a fix intended to address this issue and our customer feedback to date has been positive.

If you are still able to reproduce the issue please let me know and we can investigate further.

Public facing forums are helpful, but case numbers and references to articles help prevent unnecessary changes being made, based on inconclusive information. If anyone plans to open a ticket with Apple on this issue, please include this ticket number for reference: 100561344528.

Thanks,
Don
