I am having an awful time. My LaserJet 1606dn that I just bought 2nd hand will not connect via the same network to my phone app to print. I have done all the troubleshooting - i restarted the phone, the printer, the router. I made sure my router wasn't blocking the printers IP. Virtual Assistant & the website will not allow me to add this device, BOTH are telling me the product numbers not valid. I am reading it DIRECTLY off the sticker & when I printed out the Self Test/Device Configuration page the product number is the same as the sticker (CE749A). My device was manufactured in Vietnam so the Serial # begins with VN. The Test page shows that the status of my connection = connected. My Android S23 shows the printer available however when it is loading the print preview it says "This Printer is not Available right now." I have been at this for 4 hours. I need help. Since the assistant & website do not recognize my Serial & Product #'s I am unable to be forwarded to support.

Hi @fawnofglory

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I can imagine how frustrating this must feel after hours of effort, especially since you’ve already been thorough with restarts and network checks.

Let’s walk through some structured steps to get your LaserJet P1606dn working with your phone app:

Key Points About Your Printer

  • The LaserJet P1606dn is a USB/Ethernet-only model. It does not have built-in Wi-Fi.
  • This means it cannot connect directly to your phone over wireless like newer models. Printing from mobile requires either:
    • The printer being connected to your router via Ethernet, and your phone being on the same network.
    • Or the printer being connected to a computer (Windows/Mac), with that computer sharing the printer to the network.

Steps to Try

Confirm Network Path

  • Connect the printer to your router with an Ethernet cable.
  • Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer. Check that it shows a valid IP address (not 0.0.0.0).
  • On your phone, open a browser and type that IP address. If the printer’s Embedded Web Server opens, the printer is truly on the network.

Driver & Sharing Setup (Windows/Mac)

  • If the printer is connected via USB to a computer, install the full software package for the P1600 series.
  • Enable printer sharing on that computer so devices on the same Wi-Fi can see it.
  • On your phone, use the HP App or native Android printing service to detect the shared printer.

Mobile Printing Options

  • Since the P1606dn does not support Wi-Fi Direct or ePrint, the HP App may not recognize it directly.
  • Instead, use Mopria Print Service (built into Android) or Google’s native printing framework. These can detect printers on the same network if the driver is installed on a PC or if the printer is reachable via IP.

Manual Add in Android

  • Go to your phone’s printing settings.
  • Add a printer manually by entering the IP address from the configuration page.
  • Test a print job to confirm.

Product Number Recognition

  • The CE749A product number is correct for the P1606dn. The support site sometimes requires the series name (“LaserJet P1600 series”) instead of the exact number. Try searching under that family when adding the printer.

Why the App Shows “Not Available”

Your phone can see the printer but cannot establish a full connection because the model lacks modern mobile protocols. The workaround is to rely on IP-based printing or computer sharing rather than expecting the app to auto-recognize it like newer Wi-Fi models.
