Ensure that the driver knows that a duplex unit is present on the printer (assuming that one is):
- For the printer instance in question, bring up the Printer properties dialogue.
- Select the Device settings tab.
- Ensure that the duplex unit is set to Installed rather than Not installed.
You'll probably need to be logged in with administrator credentials in order to change the device settings.

The issue I ran in to - was that on the Mac side, I was able to duplex. However, on the PC side - everytime I tried to print 2-sided, it ALWAYS went manual. When I pulled up the printer properties and go to the device settings, everything was greyed out - couldn't change the duplex unit setting. Drove me nuts...
Now maybe this is something with Windows 10 - but when I went into Devices and Printers - I found (2) different instances for the M277dw. The one by default had "Hewlett-Packard HP Color LaserJet MFP M277dw". For this instance, the duplex unit setting was greyed out.
The other instance was labeled "HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277 PCL6". In this case I COULD change the duplex unit setting from Not Installed to Installed and works just fine now. Make sure to make this your default.
The fix works - just needed to apply it to the correct instance.

Took me a while to find the correct settings screen, but when I eventually did...It solved the problem immediately! So, thank you very much for this advice!
I wish HP would change the default setting to "installed". You always have the option to do it manually...not that I understand why you would want to do it manually when you can have it done automatically, but hey.
anyway, thanks a lot!

I could not agree more with that comment. Very annoying that the default for the duplexer is "not installed" rather than "installed." Cannot tell you how much paper I wasted trying to print two sided until I found this forum and saw this solution. Why the heck would HP sell a printer with a duplexer and have the default setting as "not installed?" It makes no sense except perhaps to HP? This is especially the case since you can always choose to print two sided or one sided in the print dialog box. If they wanted to be heloful they would have a message associated with two sided printing that would pop up and say "make sure that if you have a duplexer it is set to "installed." and provide a link to this forum thread. It is even more annoying given that I really like this printer very much and this is the first problem I have run into when using it.

@StuG1A, welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out.
I understand that you are unable to print two-sided from your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw.
Don't worry as I have a few steps that should help fix this issue.
And here's the step by step guide for you in the link:
1. Printing on Both Sides of the Paper (Windows) (Duplexing)
2. Printing on Both Sides of the Paper (Mac) (Duplexing)
You may also check page no. 39 from the manual: HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277 - User Guide
Let me know how that works.
I hope you have a good day ahead.
