HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw

I am no longer able to print due to the "Expired Certificate" error.  (Out Of Warranty)

The printer doesn't retain date and time after I power it down and also doesn't retain the certificates when I update them.

I used to be able to sync date and time and generate a new certificate which would work until I powered down the printer, but as of last month, it no longer works.  Even when I see a valid certificate and proper date and time, it is still giving me the error.

The printer is always plugged into power and has a good connection; firmware is up to date.

I have tried all of the other "solutions" to the wildly known issue that I have found on this website.

Any thoughts other than going "Office Space" on this paperweight?

Hello @TinmanAFG, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for reaching out, and I appreciate the detailed information you've already shared. We understand that your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw has been showing an "Expired Certificate" error, and that the printer is no longer retaining the date, time, or updated certificates. We will do our best to help you work through this.

To better understand the situation, could you kindly confirm a few details?

  • Are you seeing the Expired Certificate message on the printer control panel, Embedded Web Server (EWS), or on the computer while printing?
  • Is the printer connected via Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or USB?
  • After setting the correct date and time, does the printer retain them until it is restarted, or do they reset immediately?
  • Have you recently performed a factory reset or any network configuration changes?

In the meantime, kindly try the below steps and confirm :

  1. Access the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) by entering the printer's IP address into a web browser. (Click here for steps)
  2. Navigate to General Settings - Date and Time and ensure the correct time zone, date, and time are configured.
  3. Enable Network Time Synchronization (NTP) if available and verify that the printer can reach the time server.
  4. Under the Security tab, review any installed certificates and regenerate or reinstall them if necessary.
  5. Perform a restart of the printer after saving the settings.
  6. Verify that the printer firmware is current and, if available, reapply the latest firmware package to ensure all security components are refreshed correctly.

Good morning,

  • I am seeing the expired certificate message on the Print Center on both an iMac and MacBook Pro.
  • I have tried both Wifi and Ethernet connections but not USB yet.
  • The printer retains date and time until I turn it off.
  • I have attempted a network reset without any luck.

I have performed all of the steps you mention and have had success with that for approximately one year but now they are not working.  I did discover I am able to print from my iPhone but it doesn't do me much good since it won't retain the proper format.  Oh, and the printer will retain the updated certificate for a random amount of time (days, weeks, but it's completely random).

Thank You.
