Hi
I followed the instructions and generated a self-signing certificate, which I believe was successful.
I have done this procedure several times this evening to resolve the error, but it still appears.
- MacOS 15.1 (24B83)
- Printer: HP Laserjet Pro MFP M479fdw
I have tried creating the self-signing certificate on both Windows VM and on the Mac itself. But still unable to print due to the ongoing display of the error.
Thanks
Peter

Hi @Peter208
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
t looks like you're encountering an issue with an expired certificate on your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw printer, and you've been attempting to resolve it by generating a self-signed certificate. However, even after following the procedure, the error persists. Let’s troubleshoot this further and explore some solutions.
1. Check Date and Time on Printer
If the printer's date and time are not set correctly, SSL certificates may be treated as expired even if they are not. Make sure the printer’s date and time are correct:
Access the Printer’s Web Interface (using the printer's IP address):
- Open a browser and type the printer's IP address in the URL bar.
- Log in to the printer’s web interface (admin credentials required).
Check and Correct the Date/Time:
- Navigate to Settings > General Settings > Date and Time.
- Ensure that the date, time, and time zone are correct.
Reboot the Printer after adjusting the date/time to ensure the settings are applied.
2. Generate a New Self-Signed Certificate
If the certificate has expired and you’ve tried generating a self-signed certificate without success, try the following:
Option 1: Use the Printer's Web Interface to Create a New Certificate
Log into the Printer’s Web Interface:
- Type the printer's IP address in a web browser (you can find this on the printer display menu under Network > TCP/IP or Wi-Fi settings).
Go to the Security Settings:
- In the web interface, navigate to Security > Certificates or Web Services (this may vary depending on the printer’s firmware version).
Generate a New Self-Signed Certificate:
- You may have an option to create or renew a certificate directly from this interface.
- Follow the prompts to generate a new self-signed certificate.
- Once generated, restart the printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel571,
Thanks for the suggestion on setting the clock. It was out by about 2 hours.
After re-generating the self-signing certificate the printing worked. But, checking the certificates, i do not see it in the page. Is there somewhere to look to see the certificate and expiry date?
Thanks
Peter

Hi Rachel571,
That wasn't helpful. I have generated the new certificate based on your assistance. I can see on the page where the certificate should show but nothing shows.
If it doesn't show in the area that is fine. At least I am now able to use my printer. Hopefully, the certificate will last 10 years.
Regards
Peter

HP 7900 on MacOs Sequoia 15.1.1 (24B91)
Hi, I still have the same problem even though I followed all the steps:
I checked the date and time, restarted the printer
Generated a new certificate again, I see it, expiration date 2034, restarted the printer
But it doesn't work.
I reinstalled the printer on Mac, it still doesn't work.
What else can I do?

Hi AndreaLampis82
I did still have the problem after following the instructions. My printer time was out by two hours. After I sync'd the time with the computer, I was successful with the original instructions.
- Go to the Web Server. On the Mac, I click Apple Logo (top LH corner) > System Settings > Printers & Scanners
- Click the printer
- Click "Options & Supplies"
- Click "Show Printer Web Page..."
- On the web page now, Click Settings > Prefererences > Date & Time
- About halfway, you will find "Synchronize Now with This Computer" section
- Click "Sync Now"
After this you should be able to use the original instructions to generate the certificate. I was able to print after this.
