I can no longer connect my LaserJet 4000N printer to my Macs running OS 10.12.1.
My Airport Extreme assigns an IP address to the printer. I can ping the printer at that IP address using Apple's Network Utility. However when I try to add the printer using Printers & Scanners in System Preferences, the printer does not appear in the default list. When I try to add the printer using its host name or the IP address, I get an error message "Unable to verify printer on your network."
If I try to add the printer using the Host Name, when I try to print I get an error message "Unable to locate printer".
If I try to add the printer using the IP address, when I try to print I get an error message "Unable to get printer status".
I have reloaded the latest printer drivers from Apple Support.
Could this be a hardware problem with the printer? Could there be a EIO parameter setting that is wrong?

I have subsequently contacted HP on-line Chat. (This is a paid service.)
My printer is 18 years old. It can no longer respond properly to the printer drivers. We are replacing the printer. Thanks for the replies.

I'm having the same exact problem with my LaserJet 2100 TN too. However, it was working with my 10.12 up until my hard drive recently got corrupted (possibly due to trying to install Sierra, which didn't work), or for other reasons. Needless to say, I had to erase my hard drive and re-install all of my OS and Applications again. Unfortunately, had not done a total back-up in a while either, however, the printer was working at first, but now is not. Possible it was working prior to updating again to 10.12?
Before this incident, my MacBook laptop had the original HP Installation Software, but after about 10.9, it switched to being included in the OS and App Store Updates. I also had previouusly updated all applicable drivers from HP, but recall there was a problem before when it upgraded to 10.12 (or maybe 10.9-10.12?), but before, there was a solution on HP's website, but it doesn't seem to be there now.
I've tried the same things as you. Double-checked all info on HP's website, and asked an Apple Store rep for advice too. Nothing is working. The HP website states that it should work for my model too.
Can somebody please help us figure this out?

What address does the printer have. Did you perform a cold reset of the printer by pressing the green button while powering on the printer until cold reset appears on the display and release. Wait about 2 minutes and then print the config pages and tell us the address you received. If all else fails try manually giving the printer an address of 192.0.0.192 which is one that apple seems to like.
