HP Pagewide Pro MFP 477dw

Hey Everyone!

 

I was recently gifted a used Pagewide 477dw.  

 

I have since installed the printer on 2 different laptops.  Right after installing on  mine, I printed a craft project and it worked well (never had to enter password in printer).   However, now, it won't print from anything - 2 laptops or 2 phones.  Sometimes it does nothing and sometimes it says the printer is offline.  Signal strength is strong (all bars).

 

I have tried to connect multiple wireless ways with no success.  

 

Error Message given:  the WPA security passphrase configured on your HP printer does not match you wireless router setting.

Solution:  1  Run the Wireless Setup Wizard to re-enter your wireless network WPA security passphrase.

 

As with many other posts, I am 100% sure the password I am entering is correct.  

 

Things I have tried....

 

 - changing router info from WPA to WPA2 to WPA/WPA2 ( per internet suggestion)

 - changed router channel from 11 to 1, then to 6

 - went through everything virtual assistant suggested, even though much of it required the printer to be connected to the internet

 - changed name of network

 - restetting network 

 - setting printer to default factory settings

 

I am not tech saavy at all, so I may have done one or more of these incorrectly.  

 

I did dl the user manual for my printer but did not find anything that would help my specific situation.

 

In the wireless network test results page, the bolded items are:

 Security - FAIL

 Authentication Type - WPA2-PSK

 Encryption - Automatic (AES or TKIP)

 

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

 

FYI, this printer did work well for the person who gifted it.

Now that we have confirmed that you are attempting to connect everything to your home router we can move to the next step.  We need to make sure that the security type and the password on the printer match the settings on the router.

You would need to change the "Security" setting from WPA2 Personal to None.  That should to disable the wifi password so that you can test a passwordless wifi connection.  The user manual does not confirm if this is an option but it should be.  At the very least, confirm what the current setting is configured to.  WPA2 Personal is the only viable security option for most people, businesses may use WPA2  Enterprise if they have a 802.1x network configured.  

 

Next, turn your attention back to the printer.  Place the printer physically next to the router to eliminate issues with wireless distance and interferance.  

 

Perform a Cold Reset/NVRAM Reset/Factory Reset (they all do the same thing):

After the printer reboots from the reset then print off a configuration page.  The IP Address should be 0.0.0.0 by default.  Now you are ready to try a new WiFi connection.

 

Enter the wireless menu then search for and select the SSID of the home network.  Depending on if you disabled the password or not you will need to make sure both the password and the security type match what is on the router exactly.

 

You should be able to do all of this from the control panel of the printer.  No PCs are required until the printer is connected to the home network.

 

Report and error messages or take screenshots of the control panel from there if the problem persists.

 

If it looks like the printer connected then print off another configuration report.  The IP address of the printer should now match the IP Addresses of your home network (same subnet).  You can then move the printer back to its orignal location.

 

The final step is to reinstall the Printer on the network connected PCs.  You can use the normal HP software installation wizard to assist with that process.

Error Message given:  the WPA security passphrase configured on your HP printer does not match you wireless router setting.

 

This is a password conflict error message.  The password that your printer is using to connect to the home network does not match.  Without the correct password your wireless attempts will continue to fail.

 

One way to verify the problem is password related is to temporarily disable the WiFi Password.  One of the WiFi security options should be None.  Give that a try and see if you can complete the WiFi connection.  Another test is to temporarily make the password as simple and small as possible.  Some times special characters are not allowed or interpereted differently.  Setting the password to "temporary" should verify if you are using too complex of a password for the printer.

 

If the problem persists from there then please describe which devices are attempting to connect to which in this scenario.

 

For example:

Home Router === PC1

Home Router )))) PC2

Home Router )))) Printer

Home Router === TV

 

In this scenario the home router is teh central connection point for all devices.

 

If you are attemepting to use the WiFi Direct feature on your printer then your topography would look like this

Home router === PC1

Printer )))) PC1

Home router ))) PC2

Home Router === TV

 

In this scenario the home router is directly connected to most devices.  However the printer is wirelessly connected to PC1 through the printers own WiFi network.

Thanks for the response.  

 

1.  I assume you mean to change the router security to none in the password area.  This is not an option.   Our router is a Sagemcom Fast 5260 (if that helps).

 

2.  I changed the password to "temporary" and there was still no connection with the printer.  

 

3.  In looking at the router info for the network, everything is wireless from the router.

      Router - PC1

      Router - PC2

      Router - TV

      Router - Roku

I'm sorry....I'm not sure if there is a significance to )))) vs ====.  But the router is connected to all individually.

 

I tried to connect using the direct method...which would be fine for us to use.  However, after entering the pin from the printer (no pin from the back of the router worked) it said "getting info from the router" and then quickly said "windows can't get the network settings from the router".  I also tried to put in the network key in and it said "the network key isn't correct.  please try again".   To be fair, this is the first time I tried the direct method because most people said that it rarely works.  

 

Any other suggestions?

Thanks again for your suggestions.  

 

I brought the printer from the 3rd level to basement level.   I have switched the router security from WPA/WPA2 Personal to WPA2 Personal.  There is no NONE setting.  Please see below:

Sorry that is sideways.  

 

I have performed the reboot.  I printed the config report before and after.  SUCCESS!  The printer connected to the network!

We just moved the printer back up to the third floor and it is still connected and it prints!  

 

Hopefully it was just the distance.

Thanks for the confirmation. Glad to see you completed the wireless printer connection.

 

Something to note when moving forward is that the natural range of most WiFi home routers is only 1 vertical floor from where the home router is resting.  The shape of a WiFi broadcast looks something like a donut, it reaches farther horizontally than it does vertically.

 

If you continue to have WiFi issues on the 3rd floor and your home router is in the basement then consider installing a 2nd AP closer to the 2nd or 3rd floor.  This will provide your devices on the 3rd floor with better and more consistent coverage.  You can tell if a problem is distance or interferance related by bringing the WiFi device into the same room as the home router.
