If the printer firmware does not offer the "Any size" option for the cassette tray(s) , then I think that you're out of luck.

I don't understand what you mean by this.

Elsa,

Does the M605 printer that allows you to modify the setting you desire on tray 2 have a third tray? If so, perhaps a configured third tray added to this printer would free tray 2 to be declared "any" size. It's a shot in the dark, but ...

>> ... if your 566xh printer is capable of A3 or ledger size paper ...

No; the 556xh does not support those large paper sizes.

It wasn't perhaps very clear what I meant about "rotated mode".

The test print job I used (attached, with analysis, in a .zip file) produces a single page, requesting a paper size of Legal, and a logical page orientation of Portrait.

The data on the page is mostly text, with a few PCL 'filled rectangles".

Most of this is printed with the default print direction of rotation, but some of the text, and one of the filled rectangles, is printed after changing the print direction to 180° rotation.

Only orthogonal directions are supported by the print direction command:

With a print direction of rotation, cursor positions are relative to the top and left edges of the logical page.

With a print direction of 180° rotation, cursor positions are relative to the bottom and right edges of the logical page.

With the LJ M475dn, the 'rotated' text/rectangle are positioned where I'd expect to see them, so the rotated data is positioned 'correctly' on that physical page size (relative to the non-rotated equivalents), and where I'd expect to see them if I'd actually used Legal paper.

With the PW 556xh, it seems that the printer has assumed a paper size of Legal (where the bottom edge is much lower than that with A4), even though it is only A4, so the 'rotated' text/rectangle are positioned much lower (relative to the non-rotated equivalents).

I certainly wouldn't recommend that Legal documents be printed on shorter (A4) media, so which of the above two results is more 'correct' is a bit of a moot point.
