Hello, i bought yesterday my first HP Laserprinter.
Printer is OK, but i want to connect it wirelessly!
On the printer i push the Wireless button, choose Wifi protected setup, and then PIN!
I get a PIN, write it down, and push OK (i get a countdown timer of 4 minutes).
I now get my laptop, choose from the list of Wifi devices.. My printer is visible in this list, so i choose my printer!
I now have to enter my PIN (i just wrote down)!
So i do that, but after that, i get a message that the PIN isn't correct, i can try it again!
To no avail!
If i use network 2.4 en 5 Ghz and Wireless Disabled i also get a message that the Windows cannot get a network adress from the router??? (After entering the correct PIN)
(I believe for Wifi Direct ,Wireless must be disabled!)
So. i cannot connect my printer using Wifi Direct..
Does anywhone knows a solution to this problem?
Btw. i do not have/use a router.
Thanx in advance!
Bye, Ronneke

Thank you for reaching out to the HP Support community!
WPS PIN is a type of WiFi protected Set-Up to connect the printer to your WiFi Router.
In WPS PIN set-up the printer would have a key or a PIN that needs to be entered on the WiFi router settings page to connect the printer to the network.
There is a feature called WiFi Direct on this printer. This feature allows you to connect the printer to your WiFi devices like your PC's, tablets, phones, etc. without using a WiFi router.
When you connect the printer using WiFi direct, it establishes a one-to-one connection with your PC/phone/tablet.
This disables the internet access on your PC/phone/tablet if connected using WiFi direct.
This feature is usually recommended for customers who do not have a WiFi Router.
The Printer name that shows up when you select the list of available WiFi networks is of the WiFi direct feature of the printer.
The WPS PIN would not work on the WiFi direct set-up.
If you would like to use the WiFi Direct feature, the default password would be 12345678.
Connect the PC to the printer using this password to print/scan.
It would be better if the printer is connected to the main WiFi router so that you can simultaneously print from multiple devices at a time without losing the internet access.
There are several ways to connect the printer to the WiFi Router.
1. With the help of a USB cable
2. WPS method
If you have a USB cable, you can use it to connect the printer to the WiFi Network. The WiFi configuration would be transferred from the PC to the printer via the USB.
- First, download the installation software from this link or manually search for the software from the link https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/printers
- Once the download is complete, open the installation file and follow the on-screen instructions. Connect the USB between the printer and the PC when prompted.
- Select WiFi as your mode of connectivity.
- Complete the set-up and disconnect the USB cable.
- Refer to this video for more info
You can also use the WPS feature to connect the Printer to the network.
There are 2 methods of using WPS.
1. WPS PUSH set-up (if you have a WPS enabled router)
- On the printer go to settings > Wireless > WPS > PUSH button
- On the Router press and WPS button
for 3-5 seconds and release it.
- Wait for a few seconds, this connects the printer to the WiFi network.
- Install the printer software from the above link.
2. WPS PIN set-up
- Obtain the WPS PIN of your printer
- go to settings > Wireless > WPS > PIN
- Open the Router settings page on your PC and enter the WPS PIN to add the printer to the network.

Hello Atharva,
My bad is that i forget to mention thet i do not have a router!
So only a Laptop with Wifi. And a network with 2.4 and 5 Ghz speed from my provider.
And yes, while setting up te printer in my private network, i set Wirelessly OFF on the printer.
Because I want to use Wifi Direct on this printer, so i do so.
I use/set 2.4 en 5 Ghz. speed network bandwidth.
So, the printer now gives me a PIN (because i don't have a router, i selected PIN).
I now have 2 things that go wrong:
1. The PIN does not get accepted by my Laptop/Windows 10 (wrong PIN).
2. I get a message that i must enter the network security key (i believe that is my WPA key).
This password also does not get accepted!
I'm confused!?
Any clues?
Thanks in advance.

From the Computer, select the network name which has the name of the printer.
Please use "12345678" as the WiFi direct password to connect to the printer.
Once connected, try to print
Let me know what happens.

Hello Atharva,
I did what you asked, I now get the message: I can’t connect to this network.
I used 2.4 & 5 Ghz. Also only 2.4 Ghz. It all doesn’t matter, still the same message.
And, btw, is there no step by step instruction plan (Wifi Direct) for this printer on how to connect succesfully (other then you already posted, wich did't worked)?
Because the methods HP suggests, don’t work (also because they are for different printers with different function buttons.
And what network is the message mentioning?
And how does the printer knows to what network it must connect? (It does not asks for a SSID? .. but that’s all below my pay grade.)
Bottom line, is this printer unable to function in a wireless network, thus without Wifi Direct?
Or should Wifi Direct do the job (that is, without constantly switching networks)?
(Maybe the problem is that it cannot use my Internet Access point (internet), IF its on another network?)
Any ideas?
I’m in the dark.
Ok, thanks for any reply.
Greetings, Ronneke

Let's check if the printer's wireless hardware is functioning correctly.
- On the printer control panel, press the OK button.
- Open the following menus:
- Self Diagnostics
- Run Wireless Test
- Select Wireless Test and press the OK button to start the test. The printer prints a test page that shows test results
- Check if the Wireless is working correctly.
If the Wireless is working correctly, try these steps:
Step 1: Restore the printer to the factory-set defaults
Note: Restoring the factory-set defaults returns all of the printer and network settings to the factory defaults.
It will not reset the page count or tray size. To restore the printer to the factory-default settings, follow these steps.
- On the Printer Control Panel, touch the
icon.
- Go to the Service menu and select 'Restore Defaults'
Step 2: Restart the Router, Printer, and the PC
- Turn off the WiFi Router, wait for 60 seconds and turn it back on.
- Turn off the Printer, wait for 60 seconds and turn it back on.
- Restart the PC
Step 3: Connect the Printer to PC
If you would like to use the WiFi Direct Feature,
You can refer to this document or this video to know about the WiFi Direct Set-Up.
If you would like to connect the printer to the 2.4GHz/5GHz network, follow the steps from this video
Let me know if this information helps.
