Just bought a M28W printer and connected it through Wifi.
The cartridge installed is the one that came with the printer.
Printer works fine, prints and scans ok.
But regularly an popup windows appears stating that the printer cannot authenticate the cartridge:
Pressing "Don't authenticate" or "Authenticate Later" dismisses the popup for a little while but then it apears again.
This happens in a iMac with HighSierra and also happens on a MacBook Air with Catalina.
What can I do, besides keep pressing one of the buttons til eternity?
Thanks.

Try updating the firmware on the printer.
Or swap out the print cartridge with a new one after you have used up the starter cartridge.
New cartridges from HP should be about 1/4 full. This is to ensure the product survived the shipping process and was functional on delivery. If your printer was returned or used as a demo product it may not have an original HP printer cartridge installed.

I already upgraded the firmware with
HP_Laserjet_Pro_M28-M31_Multifunction_series_FW_Update-20190426.dmg.
Is this the latest version?
The printer was bought new, so the cartridge should be an HP one albeit with less toner.
New ones are already ordered.

Yes, that is the most recent firmware version for your printer model.
Cartridge security is a moving target. HP periodically updates models to catch counterfit cartridges which can sometimes trigger problems for good ones. This is an issue that the cartridge manufacturers and HP need to sort out on their own time. However, authentic HP cartridges should always work. If they dont they can be returned for a refund or you have a good reason to call the problem into HP for warranty support, even if the printer is no longer covered.
Let us know if the new cartridges from HP behave any differently.
