Hi,
We have two M254dw: one MFD in 2018, another in 2019. The older can accept the non-OEM cartridge set what I have while the newer doesn't. What can be the reason? (Is the firmware version or the manufacturing date the key?)
Thanks!

This is a setting in the printer itself that you can change. It can be disabled from the control panel or the Embedded Web Server (EWS). I just don't remember what menu option it is listed under to change. I've seen it in the options, but never needed to change it, so I don't remember where it is.
Per HP's manual:
The genuine HP authentication feature allows a customer to specify that only genuine HP supplies can be used in
a printer. If a non-HP or used supply is installed, the printer will not print. This feature is disabled by default, and
can be enabled or disabled from the control panel or the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
If a genuine HP toner cartridge from another printer is moved to a printer with this feature enabled, the toner
cartridge will authenticate and print, unless the toner cartridge has passed the low state. If the toner cartridge
has passed the low state, an Unauthorized Cartridge message displays on the control panel.
If a non-HP toner cartridge is used in a printer with this feature enabled, the message Unauthorized Cartridge
appears on the control-panel display.

I found this: HP Printers - Dynamic Security Enabled Printers
in this reply: Hp LaserJet pro M254 Cartridge not recognized
I'm afraid my situation is the same, just I'd like to know that that can be the key:
1, Is the manufacturing date (maybe hardware related)
2, Or the firmware version
I just wanted to be sure if I'm planning firmware update on the older printer may I lose the opportunity to use non-HP cartridges
Thanks!

Not compatible cartridge (or similar)
As I remember when I tested it was same FW date/version on both (I'm not 100% sure)
Meantime the newer device was updated to the latest FW (2019.08.07). (the older still has the "old" 2017.12.?? or so)
The newer printer with the latest FW still doesn't accept the non-HP cartridge set with the settings for both protections disabled (pictured above).

I've never seen firmware cause a problem like this. I think you'd be safe in updating the other one. I've update many printers without causing this kind of issue. I think your problem is more hardware related (engine control bd) than anything.
