Is there a way to clean printer besides through the maintenance procedure?  Background is gray when printing.

Most times this issue is due to the toner toner cartridge and all the cleaning in the world will not  help. To confirm the toner perform a half test by putting a sheet of paper on the manual tray in front, opening the paper trays and performing a self test. When the back edge enters the printer, quickly open the top cover to stop printing. Remove the toner and look at the image below. If the same problem it is the toner and if not the issue is probably a bad fuser.
