I have tried to print documents using various laptops. In each case, the ink is good but 2/3s the way through each row about 8 characters are showing blank . Ever row has the exactly same position of characters missing I tried cleaning the printer and changing the paper type but nothing seems to work. I have never had this problem before.

Welcome to HP forums.
- Did you make a copy and check if that prints fine?
Meanwhile:
Inspect the toner cartridge for damage
-
Remove the toner cartridge from the product, and verify that the sealing tape has been removed.
-
Check the memory chip for damage.
-
Examine the surface of the imaging drum on the bottom of the toner cartridge.
CAUTION:
Do not touch the roller (imaging drum) on the bottom of the cartridge. Fingerprints on the imaging drum can cause print-quality problems.
-
If you see any scratches, fingerprints, or other damage on the imaging drum, replace the toner cartridge.
-
If the imaging drum does not appear to be damaged, rock the toner cartridge gently several times and reinstall it. Print a few pages to see if the problem has resolved.
Check the EconoMode setting.
-
On the File menu in the software program, click Print.
-
Click Properties or Preferences.
-
Click the Color tab.
-
Click the Print in Grayscale option to print a color document in black and white. Use this option to print color documents for photocopying or faxing.
-
Click the OK button.

Thanks for the quick response. I checked the cartridges and did not see any fingerprints etc. However, I followed your suggestion and gently rocked each cartridge which I guess was a bit of overkill. In any case, it resolved the issue.
Thanks so much and my daughter thanks you becasue her term paper is due tomorrow.
