Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

I have 2 of these old (but great) printers. One is attached to a Windows XP system, the other to a W7 setup, both 32 bit.

When I installed W7 last year, I used the driver supplied on Windows Update via the add printer wizard. Some problems and it took time, but I got there in the end. At the time, someone from HP pointed out the Windows Update covered right up to W10 for the LJ 4000, but that no longer seems to be the case.

However, I can't find how to make the PCL5 driver downloaded last year recognise the optional 3rd accessory tray. It's OK with the duplexer, but paper source is only 'Auto select' as opposed to ability to choose tray on the driver for XP system. I seem to recall having a chance to enter intalled hardware options when I set up the XP driver, which enabled such things, but I can't find any of that on the W7 driver.

As mentioned above, I  have tried the Windows Update thing again, but the LJ4000 doesn't even appear now.

I've seen the advice on this forum https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/LaserJet-Printing/Will-my-Laserjet-4000-work-with-a-windows-10-compute... and looked at the link provided there by Paul Tikkanen, but I'm still a bit worried about displacing the current driver which does at least print from one tray (no.3 curiously). Also, the latest drivers there seem to be 2006 or before.

I'm using Centronics connections via a manual switch, and it's W7 32 bit drivers that I'm looking for.

I'd be very grateful for any advice. Thanks.

have you tried downloading a universal print driver?  you should be able to see if one is available by going to hp.com-->support__>drivers

see if one is listed with the PCL & Postscript drivers
