Hi @PATTI1129,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If your HP printer is displaying Error 11, it typically indicates that the printer is unable to detect the toner cartridge correctly or that an internal sensor is detecting a false paper jam. This can happen if the toner cartridge is not fully seated, the cartridge contacts are dirty, or the printer needs to be reset to clear a temporary hardware error.

Follow the steps below to resolve the issue.

Problem:

HP Printer Error 11 is commonly associated with:

  • A toner cartridge that is not installed correctly.

  • Dirty or poor electrical contact between the toner cartridge and the printer.

  • A small piece of paper or debris interfering with an internal sensor.

  • A temporary printer firmware or hardware communication issue.

Solution:

1. Reinstall the Toner Cartridge:

Reinstalling the toner cartridge ensures the printer can properly detect it.

  1. Turn the printer on.

  2. Open the toner access door.

  3. Remove the toner cartridge.

  4. Carefully inspect the toner compartment for any small or torn pieces of paper or other obstructions.

  5. Reinsert the toner cartridge firmly until it clicks securely into place.

  6. Close the access door and check whether the error clears.

2. Clean the Toner Cartridge Contacts:

Dirty electrical contacts can prevent the printer from recognising the toner cartridge.

  1. Turn the printer off and unplug the power cord.

  2. Using a soft, dry, lint-free cloth, gently clean the metallic contact points on the toner cartridge.

  3. Also wipe the corresponding contacts inside the printer, taking care not to damage them.

  4. Reinstall the toner cartridge.

3. Perform a Hard Reset:

A hard reset clears temporary hardware states that may be preventing the printer from initializing correctly.

  1. Leave the printer powered on.

  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  4. Wait at least 60 seconds.

  5. Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors or extension cords).

  6. Reconnect the power cord to the printer and turn it on if it does not power on automatically.

Expected Outcome

After completing these steps, the printer should detect the toner cartridge correctly, and Error 11 should be cleared. If the error persists, it may indicate a faulty toner cartridge or an issue with the printer's toner detection mechanism that requires further diagnosis.

I hope this helps resolve the issue. If the error remains after completing all the steps above, please let us know the exact HP printer model and whether you are using an HP Original toner cartridge or a compatible replacement, so we can provide more targeted troubleshooting.

Take care and have a great day.
