The energy settings don't seem to work:

Sleep/auto off- machine never goes silent and screen stays lit.  Based on the time setting, it seems to go silent, but starts back up again'

Auto off- machine never goes off.

I have it set to No Delay.

My other HP printers, all go silent and dark when not in operation, not this model.  Am i misssing something?

If disconnecting the fax line worked, then most likely it's waking up because of "noise" or static on the line, which wakes the printer up out of sleep.  Suggest you try complaining to your phone company, perhaps they can switch you to a better pair.

Is it connected to a phone line (for fax use)?

Do you have anything on your network that periodically probes for other devices?

There is a dedicated phone line for fax use.  The printer is connected through a home network via cable. Only my desktop is hard wired to this network. There is a laptop connected wirelessly via the network to access the printer. Thanks.

As an experiment, try unplugging the printer from the phone jack, and see if it then stays asleep.

Disconnecting fax line seems to work, now will sleep. Fortunately we don't get incoming faxes much if it all, only use outgoing so this means we will have to connect the line every time....could be worse I suppose.
