Just changed cartridges and the yellow cartridge gives the following message " Unable to read cartridge data from the indicated cartridges (yellow).  Reinstall the cartridges.   If the problem persists, replace the cartridges."

Note:  I have not replaced the cartridge yet.  Should this solve the problem?

Hi @MARCPLOTKIN

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that your HP printer displays the error "Unable to read cartridge data from the indicated cartridges (Yellow). Reinstall the cartridges. If the problem persists, replace the cartridges.", it means the printer is unable to communicate with the yellow ink cartridge. Follow the troubleshooting steps below in order.

Step 1: Verify the Cartridge Compatibility

  1. Ensure the yellow cartridge is the correct cartridge for your printer model.
  2. If the cartridge is newly purchased, verify it is a genuine HP cartridge.
  3. Check that the cartridge is not damaged or expired.

Step 2: Restart the Printer

  1. Turn the printer ON.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait 60 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet (avoid power strips).
  6. Turn the printer back on and wait until it becomes idle.

Check whether the error is cleared.

Step 3: Remove and Reinstall the Yellow Cartridge

  1. Open the cartridge access door.
  2. Wait until the carriage stops moving.
  3. Press the yellow cartridge gently to release it.
  4. Remove the cartridge.

Inspect the following:

  • Remove all protective tape or plastic from the cartridge.
  • Make sure the vent on top of the cartridge is not blocked.
  • Check for any physical damage, ink leakage, or broken parts.
  1. Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks into place.
  2. Close the cartridge access door.

Step 4: Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  1. Turn the printer on.
  2. Remove the yellow cartridge.
  3. Using a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly moistened with distilled water, gently clean:
    • The copper-colored electrical contacts on the cartridge.
    • The corresponding contacts inside the printer carriage.
  4. Do not touch the ink nozzles.
  5. Allow the contacts to dry for about 5 minutes.
  6. Reinstall the cartridge.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists. Please share the printer model and the Error displayed.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
