My color laserjet enterprise MFP M776 gives error code 98.00.00. We have disconnected the printer from power and internet  and restarted after 5 minutes several times. But the error keeps coming. What should we do to solve this?

Hello @Maaboo, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I understand that your HP Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M776 continues to display error 98.00.00 even after you have disconnected the power and network cables and restarted the printer several times.

Because the error persists after a power cycle, the printer may be encountering a problem during startup, potentially involving its firmware or internal storage. A power reset alone may not resolve the underlying issue.

Step 1: Check whether the Preboot Menu is accessible

The Preboot Menu provides recovery options on supported HP Enterprise printers. Before attempting a firmware recovery or disk operation, check whether you can access it.

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Turn it back on and watch the touchscreen during startup.
  3. When the HP logo appears, try tapping the logo repeatedly to access the Preboot Menu, if supported by your printer's firmware.
  4. If the menu opens, note the available options before making any changes.
  5. The menu and access procedure can vary by firmware version. If the printer does not respond or the menu is unavailable, do not repeatedly attempt recovery procedures.

Step 2: Avoid cleaning or formatting the disk until the cause is confirmed

  1. Some HP Enterprise printer recovery menus offer options such as Partial Clean, Clean Disk, or other reset operations. These options are not interchangeable, and some can erase stored settings, jobs, or other data.
  2. Before selecting any of them, confirm the recommended recovery procedure for your exact M776 configuration with HP Support. Do not format the internal storage simply because error 98.00.00 is displayed.

Step 3: Check the official firmware recovery options

If the printer can enter its Preboot Menu, HP may provide a supported firmware recovery procedure for your specific model and current firmware state.

  1. Visit the HP Support website.
  2. Search for your exact HP Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M776 model.
  3. Check the available firmware downloads and recovery instructions.
  4. Confirm with HP Support whether firmware recovery through USB is appropriate for this error before attempting installation.
  5. A firmware recovery file must be compatible with the printer, and the printer must support the selected recovery method. Do not assume that a standard firmware update package can resolve every startup error.

Have a great day!
