P1606DN printer

I have a P1606DN printer that I had manually set the IP address to a hard address.......(it was a comcast router... 10.0.0.239 if you must know...).

I recently moved to a Verizon router that gives a totally different IP range.  i.e. the previous address was not recognized by the new router and I couldn't get to the printer.

I need to do a FACTORY RESET to tell the printer to get the IP address from the DHCP server on the router right ?

Well........I did that and the "IP Configured by" . setting is stuck to "Manual".   I see that others have had this problem but they did a work around.   That will not work for me b/c I can't get to the printer.....

Doing the factory reset, has set the IP address of the printer to 0.0.0.0.    my browser will not point to it and I can't ping it.   I have a few PC's and a Mac on my network.

Any ideas on how to get the factor reset to tell the printer to get the IP address from the server/router ?

thanks in advance.

BTW: giving me instructions on how to do a factor reset is a waste of your time as I've alrdy done it several times.

A printer normally resets to 0.0.0.0 after a successful NVRAM reset or COLD reset.  The printer should also revert back to Automatic/DHCP as its IP Address mechanism too.  When the printer touches base with the DHCP server on your home router it should pull a new IP address.

I did that and the "IP Configured by" . setting is stuck to "Manual".

This is a clue that your printer did not fully reset.  In HPs world there is a difference between Factory Reset and NVRAM/COLD resets.  The latter is the best and typical way we reset a printers static IP Address.  NVRAM reset steps are only found in the Service Manuals, not the User Guides that are available to the public.  Be careful to confirm if you are using one or the other as it will impact your results.  It might help to share the steps you are trying if you are not sure which reset you are working with.

> Doing the factory reset, has set the IP address of the printer to 0.0.0.0.

0's is what the printer reverts to when it has been reset and before it pulls a new DHCP address.  You cannot navigate to 0's as it is not a real IP.  There are other ways to work around this such as connecting to the printer via the USB cable and the HP Toolbox software.  You can still hit the admin page of the printer with this technique and reconfigure the Networking area to your liking.

I guess the easiest thing to do is to make sure the port you are plugging the printer into has an active DHCP service working behind it.  You can do that by plugging one of your many PCs into that port on the new home router.  Ensure the PC has DHCP enabled and see what it gets.  If the PC cannot pull an IP address from that port then you know something is up with the home router and need to clear that issue first.  Disable anything on the home router that would attempt to assign the old IP address to the printer such as DHCP reservation or MAC identification/filtering.  Once you get it working you can turn these features back on again.

Hi @yahoosier

What is the current IP of your printer?

An 0.0.0.0 means that the printer does not have any connection to the network.

Have you tried using another Ethernet cable and check?

Have you tried switching to another LAN port of your router?

Could you clarify what steps have you taken to restore the settings? To ensure the correct steps were taken.

The printer's IP address is 0.0.0.0

The "IP Configured by" is set to MANUAL.   This does not sound right.  Shouldn't it say "DHCP server"  or something like that ?
Note that the "DHCP/BOOTP Server address is also 0.0.0.0.   All other systems on my network can get IP addresses just fine.

This is what I did to restore -- Steps to restore factory settings:  I hit power button, then pressed the two buttons until all the lights were flashing.

Correct, the printer should revert back to "Automatic" instead of "Manual" after a successful COLD reset.

The steps you provided suggest you are performing a NVRAM Reset of some kind, not the Restore Defaults option that is normally found under the control panel or the Embedded Web Server.  We need to get your printer back to Automatic so it can pull a DHCP address again.

If manually configuring the printer from the control panel does not allow it to switch to "automatic" then your only other option is to try the USB trick I mentioned earlier.  Gain access to the EWS/Admin page via USB and then try to change the network settings from that menu.  If you can gain access to the EWS then you can also try resetting the defaults from that menu too.  Some models like the M102w behave differently when you reset from the EWS so its worth a shot to see if it will impact the behavior of the printer if you can get that far.

TTHHAANNKK YYOOUU !

I found a Service Manual for the "1600".  It has a "NVRAM Initializer".....   I'm hoping that works on the 1606 as well.  The steps are below if someone finds this in the future.

NVRAM initializer NVRAM init will perform the following functions: ● Resets all customer-accessible menu settings via control panel and software back to the factory default settings ● Resets the language to the value set at the factory ● Resets the default media size to cold reset media size ● Resets the symbol set to PC-8 Use the following procedure to execute an NVRAM-init. 1. Turn off the printer. 2. Press and hold the (Select) and (Cancel Job) buttons simultaneously. 3. Turn on the printer. 4. When you see the message Permanent storage init displays, release the (Select) and (Cancel Job) buttons. When the NVRAM init is complete, the printer will return to the Ready state

Alas, the initialize routine didn't work.....   I held down the two buttons while off and then hit the on button.

I'll need to find the  USB cable and give that a go.  thanks again.
