Color LaserJet CP5225dn
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I'm having a curious issue with my Color LaserJet CP5225dn.  I've decided to use heavier 11x17 paper in tray 2.  When I select a paper type for tray 2 on the on-screen menu other than "plain" (for example I want to use "mid-weight 96-110lg"), I am no longer able to print using that tray.  I get a message that says to load 11x17 paper into tray 1 and then

"Press [OK] to use available media"

If I switch the paper type for tray 2 back to "plain", then everything works ok again.

And, If I manually select the tray and paper type in the printer properties dialog then it will print fine.  I'd much prefer automatically select tray 2 when I choose 11x17 paper from applications like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat.

I've tried powering cycling the printer after changing the paper type and also uninstalling and reinstalling the print driver on my win10 machine.

The short answer is you have to send the job with the paper type being the same as you specify in tray2. In other words if you say tray 2 has md-weight, then when you send the job the driver on the computer has to have that type of paper specified or it will ask for whatever type the job requests to be placed in tray 1. Unless the paper type in the driver and the paper type on the printer match, the job will only draw paper from a tray on the printer that has the same paper type or ask you to load it in tray 1.

Thanks for the info. Makes sense. If I could follow up with another question.. Is there any disadvantage or problem with continuing with the mid-weight paper and printing with the "plain" setting?

As long as the toner adheres to the paper ok you should not have an issue. Generally when you choose a higher weight of paper the printer will move the media a bit slower thru the printer to help mostly with the binding of the toner to the paper but also to prevent the occasional jam. You should not have an issue.
