I got myself a new HP Color LaserJet Pro M280-M281 printer and its quite fine product except when it goes to standby mode and then the noise start to come out. I was able to pinpoint the problem to Network/USB (I think):
Network: If there is network activity while device is on standby mode it starts to emit the noise. It doesn't seem to matter what kind of activity there is but it has to be more intensive than just normal network hello packages. I tried setting printer on different lan speeds and duplexes but it didn't change the situation.
I enabled SNMP on my printer and when ever polling happens from the server you can hear the noise.
USB: If the usb-cable is connected to the computer, while device is on standby, printer emits bit lower noise but it still does it.
With more analysis on this problems I tested the device without any lan/usb cables attached the device still emits the noise while on standby. I can only guess that the reason for this must be the electronic components used on this device. And i don't think this can be fixed with any firmware or software upgrades.
One option would be disable powersaving mode entirely but for that I would need to find and access to the engineering menu. I read that in some models you have an engineering menu from where you can disable entire powersaving options but wasn't able to find a guide for this model.

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.
Make sure the Wireless Direct is off:
From the printer control panel, touch (wireless direct). 2. Use the slider next to HP Wireless Direct to turn wireless direct off.
Let's try to reset the Printer here as it helps in removing any stored static electricity from the Printer which might be causing these issues.
- Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
- NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Let me know if this helps.
