I have a user with an HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M177fw and it will not install. I have it connected directly with USB and once it gets to 99% it says a "fatal error" has occured. Any solutions to this issue?

Welcome to HP Forums,
This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂
As I understand you have a fatal error during installation of your HP Printer,
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
Did you check if the driver is showing in the device manager?
Have you captured the error code/message?
While you respond to that, here's what you need to do:
When you are prompted to connect the USB cable during software installation, use the Device Manager to manually select the printer driver. Follow these steps to open the Device Manager and select the printer driver to complete the software installation.
-
On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (
), and then click Control Panel. The Windows Control Panel opens.
-
Click System and Maintenance, and then click Device Manager. The Device Manager window opens.
-
Click View, and then select Show hidden devices on the drop-down menu. A list displays in the Device Manager window.
-
Click the plus sign (
) next to Printers to expand the listing. From the listing, right-click HP Universal printing PCL_5 (or PCL_6 depending on the version), and then click Update Driver Software. The Update Driver Software screen displays.
-
From the Update Driver Software screen, click Browse my computer for driver software, and then click Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer. The Add Printer Wizard screen displays.
-
From the Add Printer Wizard screen, select your printer driver from the list, and then click Next. The driver installation process begins.
NOTE:
Do not select the Universal Printer driver on the Add Printer Wizard screen. Make sure to select the printer that you are trying to install.
-
When the driver software installation is complete, click Close to close the Update Driver Software window. The original software installer window displays, and the software installation continues automatically.
-
When your software installation is complete, click Finish.

Hello,
Thanks for your response, but that did not work. Also, I am installing on a Windows 10 comptuer not 7. When I go to device manager I do not see Printers just Printe Queue and that driver is not listed. Here is a picture of the error I get :
This happens once it gets to 99%.
I also wanted to note that the printer shows up as an optical drive and has a setup and autorun executable and neither run when I open them as admin or not.
One last thing, this printer was installed on the computer previously. After it stopped working I removed it and now am not able to reinstall, which is why I'm here.
Anything else I can try?

The fix for this seems to be to turn off HP SmartInstall at the printer itself. On the touchscreen, go to the Settings Icon, then Service, then HP Smart Install. Turn it off, then restart the printer. Immediately, Windows 10 installed it automatically for me.
Hope this helps someone out there!
