HP DESKJET 1512

I have downloaded the software, and everything is fine until the last stage, a prompt comes on the screen asking me to connect the printer to my computer.

i have a usb connecting cable connecting the printer and laptop, however its still saying to connect a cable.

i have tried all of the usb ports on the laptop, plugged and unplugged both from the printer and laptop (and its a hp G56 laptop).

does this printer work with ONLY a hp deskjet 1512 usb cable??

it was frustrating enough to find out the usb cable was not included in the package : S

Hello @LORRHART,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I would like to assist you today with installing your printer through a USB Cable connection on your Windows computer. I understand that when running the installation of your printer your computer is not detecting the USB Cable as connected. This can occur if the USB Cable was plugged in before the installation prompted you to plug the cable in. USB detection issues can also occur if there is an issue with the USB Ports or USB Cable. The USB Cables only come with printers that require the USB Cable for wireless setup. Because this printer does not require a USB Cable for wireless configuration the cable will not come included in the box with the printer, as indicated on the HP website. Please follow the steps below to resolve this USB connectivity issue.

Step 1: Uninstall Drivers:

Even though your installation is not completing, there is a chance that a portion of the software and drivers made their way onto your computer. For troubleshooting purposes it is important that we remove any trace of the printer from the computer so we have a clean slate to work with.

  1. Please disconnect your USB Cable
  2. Close the installation window
  3. Click on you Start menu
  4. Select All Programs
  5. Select the HP folder
  6. Select your HP Deskjet
  7. Select Uninstall

Please follow any onscreen instructions to complete the uninstall

Step 2: Clear Temp Files:

  1. Click on your Start menu
  2. In the 'search programs and files' box located right above Start after you click on it, type %temp% and hit enter on your keyboard
  3. When the Temp folder opens, select Ctrl + A at the same time on your keyboard. Everything in this folder will now highlight.
  4. Select the 'delete' button on your keyboard. The Temp folder contains temporary internet files. No actual files or folders on your computer will be affected by deleting the Temp files. Should a Temp file still be used than you will automatically get the pop up to 'skip' that item.
  5. Close the Temp folder once it is emptied
  6. Right click the Recycling Bin on your desktop and select Empty Recycling Bin

Step 3: Install Drivers:

  1. Please click here to download the latest drivers for your printer
  2. Once the website opens select the Download button on the top left
  3. Please follow any onscreen instructions to install your printer
  4. Do not plug in the USB Cable until the installation screen prompts you to.

Once the installation is complete please test your machine to confirm that everything is functioning properly.

Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Good luck! 🙂

Hello.  I am having this same issue with windows 10. I have followed all these steps. Everytime I come to the screen to plug in the device, it don't recognized. I have uninstalled the HP deskjet again. What else can I do!? Help!!!

I recently received the 1512 deskjet.  I have El Capitan.  I downloaded the Apple Software driver update v.12.34.0. and although it will scan and print a scanned page, it will not print from the computer.  I keep getting the error message.  ... "waiting for the printer to become available"  I don't know what to do to make it available.  The printer is turned on.  I have changed the port it is plugged into. It looks like it's going to print but then the print job box goes blank and nothing happens  But if I click on completed jobs the jobs are all listed as having been printed.   I would appreciate any help.

Thanks.

I was having the same issues and also tried to resolve it by uninstalling and installing the driver software. After that, I unplugged it and plugged it in again, works wonderfully.

I also saw another post where it worked by unplugging it from the power strip and plugging it directly into the wall outlet!

Good luck!

I was finally able to get the printer to work.  My son helped me work through it.  The old driver was on my computer as well as the new needed driver.  Once we deleted the old driver and clicked on the new one, it worked.  Thanks for your input.

After hours of installing, uninstalling, standing on my head, unplugging and CURSING STUPID HP I came across your directions and they worked the first time
