LaserJet 1536DNF

Greetings all,

My grandfather's LaserJet 1536DNF has an issue where the unit will not copy a document using the automatic feeder. It simply feeds the paper through, and then goes back to "Ready" without printing anything, not even a blank page. The scanning lamp never glows while the paper is being fed. Yet, the lamp is fine, since scanning/copying works perfectly using the flatbed scanner. This is clearly a common fault, given all of these other posts from people with the exact same issue:

None of these posts provides a solution. I have power-cycled multiple times, reset the memory (by holding left-arrow and cancel), and have updated to the latest firmware. It's plugged into the wall directly. This eliminates all of the typically recommended "fixes". I'm a professional electronics repair tech (mostly of older things that were actually made to last and be fixed), but it's difficult since I don't have the service manual or any other info to go on. Please advise.

There is a FFC cable that runs from the ADF to the scanner control board (formatter in this case), and they tend to fail over time. If you can make a new cable you can likely resolve the problem.

Thanks for your reply; this is exactly the sort of info I'm looking for. Would you be able to provide any direction as to where specifically this cable and its associated board are located? And perhaps the recommended disassembly procedures? I presume this is all in the service manual, but I haven't been able to find it so far. Thanks.

The cable could be the problem or it could be the control board. I had a customer with a different printer and a similar problem where it would error only if trying to fax, all scans and copies worked great. Had to replace the entire scanner assy. to fix.

Here's a couple of sites for the service manual:

Good luck.

Excellent, thanks for the info and especially the link to the service manual! I will have a chance to work on the printer again within the next few weeks, and I'll report back here how it goes.
