Receiving the following error message can anyone help?

"49.38.0C DEVICE ERROR.  TO CONTINUE TURN OFF AND THEN ON."

It's happening at least 3 times to 4 times a day.

49.xx errors indicate a firmware error from which the printer cannot recover.

There are two probable causes:

  • A fault within the formatter board- replacement required.

  • A rogue print job, or some other communication (perhaps some sort of interrogatory request) which is 'malformed' or contains structures which the firmware has not been designed to handle because (it thinks there are) logical inconsistencies.

To check which of these is likely to be the cause, if it only happens intermittently, will be difficult.

If it happened every time the printer was switched on (for example), then you would have been able to check  what happens if the device was powered-up without any connections (USB, network, Wifi); if the fault still occurred, this would have indicated a hardware problem.

The fact that it (presumably) doesn't happen every time that the printer is powered-on does not preclude a hardware fault, but it does make it more likely that a rogue 'job' is the cause.

Tracking down such a rogue job may not be easy, especially if there are quite a few workstations on the network.

In theory, the firmware should be able to handle 'malfomed' jobs, failing them 'quietly' without causing the fimware to crash, but this is not always the case; sometimes a firmware update (if one is available) may include fixes for known problems of this type.

Thank you, I will try first the firmware update and see if that resolves the issue and post an update. Thank you

I performed the upgrade to the firmware and within 1 hour it did a restart again. Also while I was at the location another printer, exact same model number, etc. starting doing the same thing and showing the error the same I am getting from this one. Any more ideas and do you think just by chance both boards are bad on the devices?

It's possible, but probably very unlikley.

I still think that the probable cause is something on your network sending a print job, or interrogatory request, which is 'malformed' in some way.

You state that "... performed the upgrade to the firmware and within 1 hour it did a restart again ...", so why not:

  • Power-off the printer.
  • Disconnect all cables (USB, network, etc. and disable Wifi (if applicable).
  • Power the device back on.
  • Wait for a couple of hours to see if the error message & restart occurs.
  • If the error occurs, this indicates a hardware isue.
  • If not, it indicates a 'rogue' job/request/connection - but finding out what & from where can be difficult on a large network.

... and this old thread (one of many reporting 49.xx errors) contains some advice (albeit for a different  printer model) for obtaining additional diagnostic evidence (although it's probably only useful to HP):
