I had the printer set up on my network for over a year. No issues. I go to use it yesterday and it shows up as offline. I restarted the printer, unplugged it, reset the settings to factory default and reconfigured it. Still will not connect to the network.

Check the IP address. If you were set to DHCP/Automatic IP then your home router may have cleaned it up and removed it over time due to inactivity.
Print off a configuration page from the printer to confirm what the current IP address is. Confirm if you are recieving an error message when connecting it to the network or not.
If everything looks good and you get a new IP then reisntall teh printer with the latest software update from HPs support site for your model and OS. This will refresh the IP info and allow you to talk to the printer again.

> I checked the ip address it just says duplicate ips detected
That would suggest either an error with your DHCP server or you accidentally assigned a static IP address that is currently assigned to something else. You will want to correct that problem so each machine has a unique IP on your network.
>And i cannot ping the ip.
THis is a byproduct of having an IP address conflict. When there are conflicts all network communication to that IP will break.
> however, can ping the ipv6 address.
IPv6 is seperate from IPv4. If you are configured for IPv6 then you may be alright but most of us still use IPv4 for home and personal use.
> I am going to try and update the firmware and see if that fixes it.
Couldnt hurt.
