HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401n prin
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I cannot get my new Windows 10 machine to work with my old printer (HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401n printer ).

I have tried all of the following:

< Get drivers from HP (I tried them all from the offical HP site) to no avail; the comprehensive driver from HP and my HP driver disc bomb out before installation.

(It has to be a Windows 10 issue since I do not think this used to happen); is there a patch that I need so I can successfully download the driver for my printer?

< Deleting USB root hub and then rebooting for fresh install of USB root hub

< Checking that the printer can print a test page (it can)

< testing a different USB cord from a printer I know is working; the USB chord I know works did not solve my issue so it must not be the USB cord that is the issue

< installing the printer by using an IP address

< run the trouble shooter; it always bombs out before finishing (attempted to run in 5 times but it always bombs)

< switch from 3.0 USB to 2.0 USB connection (neither one works)

< tried deleting all printers and then unplugging problematic printer, shutting down PC and then rebooting; then turning on printer and plugging in USB cable; it beeps like it is detecting it but it does not show up in the device manager and does not work; it also does not say a driver was successfully installed or the printer was installed successfully, etc.

< I have another PC with Windows 10 and the exact same printer and it is working OK; I therefore connected to this printer over my network to see if it would grab the drivers and perhaps make my printer on the new Windows 10 machine work; I did connect to that printer over the network but it did not solve my problem.

Printer remains in error state and and does not show up in the device manager.  It does shows in the devices and printers area but all print jobs are hung up in the queue and it says error.

I have another zebra printer on the PC and it is working great.

Any help would be greaterly appreciately; 3 hours and counting on this one!

Hi,

In my opinion, to start fresh, you will need to do a Reset,  you can try this:

After performing an NVRAM initialization, reconfigure any computers that print to this product so that

the computers can recognize the product.

  1. Turn the product off.
  2. Touchscreen control panel models: Press and hold the lower right quadrant of the

touchscreen. Keep the quadrant depressed as you turn the product on.

  1. When the Permanent Storage Init. message appears on the display, release the buttons.
  2. When the product has finished the NVRAM initialization, it returns to the Ready state.

After rebooting, go to the Service Menu, go to USB Speed, Change it to full.

**printer will restart****

Go back to the Service Menu, Look for an option that says HP SMART INSTALL, if you see it, turn it off.

For USB connection we recommend, a cable no longer than 6ft, and a direct connection (NO USB HUBS, NO DOCKING, ETC)

BRILLIANT suggestions on the USB speed and turning off HP Smart Install! I'd tried downloading drivers from HP 4 times resulting in an error each time, using HP support and Smart doc or something like that too. All failed. I was beyond upset with HP's support products. Found your response thinking perhaps the printer wasn't compatible with Windows 10. Set USB speed to full from High and turned off HP Smart Install and Windows immediately recognized and installed the printer.
