LaserJet Pro 400 m401n
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello, I am having issues when printing to my HP LaserJet Pro m401n,  keep getting the message "memory low, job cancelled." Mainly happens when printing pdf's, but is not limited to printing pdf's. The printer is connected to the PC via USB, the printer is not connected to the network. Have tried uninstalling/reinstalling printer and the drivers, this does not fix the issue. Unable to add the printer via IP address as it is not connected to the internet, its just connected USB. Printer is on the most updated drivers. Any Suggestions?

Dell Latitude laptop running windows 7 SP1 64 bit OS.

Hello,

I found this reply in a previous post:

"Issue is resolved. All you have to do is select PRINT --> ADVANCED OPTIONS --> PRINT AS IMAGE. That is all. Within the Adobe Reader program if you do this, it will print with no problem. The memory issue occurs with only certain PDF file that are a combination of images/text. The print driver cannot correctly rasterize the entire document. By selecting PRINT AS IMAGE, the entire PDF gets translated properly to the printer and is able to print. Does not affect any of the other documents and everything is set. Hope that helps others.

Still using the latest PCL 6 drivers. No need to change that. "

You cannot increae the memory in this printer.  If changing driver settings does not work for you, you can break the print job into multiple jobs each with a fewer amount of pages.

The problem with that is you cant set adobe to default to print as image, this is a workaround, but the user does not want to have to select print as image everytime they need to print.

We have this very same issue every week and are loosing prinouts. When the memory runs out the printer becomes very slow and then print jobs are lost.

This is a network printer and many people can print. They can all cause this type of problem.  Training them to use different print settings in adobe and hoping they rember is NOT AN OPTION.

So here is my question I hope will lead to a solution.

Is there a way to send a reset command to the printer? One that will clear out the memory, Or a way to automate a power down restart? We could write a program to send this command once a night. We are having this probelm about once a week for the last 6 months when we installed the printer.

Our other solution is to through this printer away and get something else. We can not be losing print jobs and wasting time reprinting orders and finding the ones that didn't print.

I solved the problem by replacing with this printer.

Dell Smart Printer S5830dn

Now we are very happy. I realy like HP but their support is realy lacking lately.

I solved the problem!

It involves the Firmware on the printer system. You must go to the Setup Menu. Then you must select Service. Then the tab that says Firmware Date. I believe it gives the option to either reset or restart. Once you select it the printer will shutdown and restart. Then the printer is fixed  and it will print as normal.
