Laserjet 4000N
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I am the original owner of a HP 4000N.  It has been sitting about 2 years unused.  I went to use it and got some kind of error that I did not record.  Went to pull the towner out and it felt stuck.  So I pulled harder, the toner came out but dumped toner all over the inside.  Ordered ne cartridge.  Cleaned up the toner inside quite a bit,  Put in new toner cartridge went to ready, Yay I thought.

Only prints blank pages, actually I guess that's not really printing.  Removed ethernet from printer, shut down, removed ethernet interface, turned on, went to ready.  Pushed the printer engine test button and am getting blank pages.

What's next?

Not aware of a video but these instructions were on another site and should be clear enough

The issue is as noted the shutter. There is a black plastic piece that is "triggered" by the toner cartridge to open it. This often either slips off its linkage (put it back) or breaks.

If it's broken or won't stay back there's a 30-second fix:

1. Remove the top cover. Unsnap the lever from the toner cover (the one that rotates on its hinge; it's the white plastic piece that extends out of the printer. It just presses out.

2. Remove the side cover on the right side; it just pulls back.

3. Remove the 4 top cover screws; two on the top under the toner cover, two on the rear under the rear paper guide cover. Remove the toner cartridge.

4. Carefully unsnap and lift the top cover off. Note the cable to the front panel board must be removed, so don't pull up hard or you'll break that cable or connector. Disconnect the panel connector and set the top cover aside.

5. The shutter is the silver metal piece that has a lever on the left side; the black lever behind it is the trip. If it's out of place, put it back. If it's BROKEN, remove the broken pieces, then use a small zip tie around the metal actuating arm on the shutter and the plastic adjacent to hold it open.

Reassemble, you're done and it will work. The shutter only serves to keep dust out of the assembly when a cartridge is not in the printer. The rest of the time it's open, so it is not necessary unless you move the printer around with the cartridge out.

Common issue is for the shutter for the laser to get broken so it does not open when a cartridge is inserted. The lever that opens the shutter is on the top right side of the cartridge cavity. Some users have disassembled the top and physically removed the shutter. This works by does bypass a safety feature that blocks the possibility of laser light escaping when the cartridge door is open

Do you know of someplace with a DIY for how to remove the shutter?

I found a service video and removed that shutter, printing awesome, according to m y wife.

I can't tell because I looked in there while it was printing, kinda like that scene in Indiana Jones, and I'm BLIND now!
