This old workhorse has been printing well with no problems for many years. A couple of days ago, a document with many pages was printing and it jammed. We fixed the paper jam, but since then the printer has been printing sheets with the entire surface in black. You can make out faint repeating images. We did replace the toner but we are still having this problem. Any suggestions to keep this printer alive and operating properly? Thanks.

That contact will touch corrisponding ground on a power supply board underneath all that plastic housing, it is indeed the cause of your issue.  Replacing that board requires some disassembly, if you're not comfortable w/ digging into these units, i'd avoid a self repair.

check to make sure the contacts inside the printer are not out of place/broken.  It sounds like you've got a bad ground when the toner is in the machine, not making good contact with the connections on the high voltage power supply.  If the contacts are good, it could be that power supply causing the issue.  Replacing a toner wouldnt help in this situation, because the problem is with the contacts inside the printer.  you'll usually see them on the inner left side where the cartrige sits.  Hope this helps

I think you may have located the problem. I found what I believe is a broken contact on the left side of the printer, as you suggested. I have attached two photos. I have circled the area where the broken part was found. And the other photo shows the broken parts that I found inside. Is this the broken contact to which you are referring? Is this a part that I can order and replace without bringing it in for service? Thank you again for your help.

Thank you so much for this information.

I fear that it would be as costly to repair it as it would be to get a 21st century replacement.

We are looking at retiring the old printer now.

Thank you again for all your help.
