M2727NF MFP
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have a HP Laserjet M2727NF. The scan bar lights up (blinking) and moves around during "initialization". Printer goes to the "ready" state. It prints fine. BUT when I want to copy something the light bar lights up but does not move, thus the printout is just a black line on the side of the paper.

There are no error code, it boots up fine, initialized fine, prints fine. The scanner light bar moves around looking for the home/calibration strip just fine as it surpose to. BUT when I try to copy a document, the light bar will not move.

Any help is appriciated. Yes it was working before for 2 years, suddenly decided to do this.

RESOLVED / FIXED...

After replacing the step motor in the scanner assembly I can copy document just fine.  Printout is as expected.

This is a strange one.  Maybe someone with more electronic knowledge then I can explain it?

Thanks for all your suggestions.

I just want to know approx. where the issue is. Is it the scanner assembly or the formatter board, or the wire harness.

If scanner assemble, is it the step motor, scan head, wiring?

I'm going to try and replace some of the parts. If someone knows  which parts that would be very helpful.

thanks

Since it initializes when booting and moves back and forth that would indicate hardware is ok and the command when you copy is not reaching the hardware. First thing I would do is update the firmware which if the operating system is corrupt in some way that should correct the issue. If that does not work I would remove the thin strip of glass on the left side below the adf and then use a needle nose pliers to move the belt that is attached to the scanner all the way to the left side. Do this with the power off. Leave the glass off and turn on the printer and see if the scanner  now moves all the way to the right and the unit comes to ready. If it does then I would think you have a bad formatter. Also have you tried it both ways. In other words does it do it when you lay the paper on the glass and also when you use the ADF or just it just happen with one of those methods.

Thanks fo rthe reply....

1) I have already updated/flash the firmware. No improvement

2) I removed the entire glass and manually move the scan head all the way to the left. I put the glass back and power up the printer. Scan head lights up blinking and inches back and forth to the right until it found the calibration strip on far right. Printer goes to the READY state. no improvement

3) I have tried scan from both ADF and glass. Result is the same. I get a printout with a black line each time, scan head won't move.

4) I have even tried baking the formatter board (360 degree for 8min). No change, no improvement.

5) I have perform a "permanent memory init" by holding right arrow+cancel keys during power up. No improvement

6) I have perform a reset by unplugging the power cord while in the READY state, wait 30 sec and plug power back in. No improvement

7) I have visially inspected the ribbons and did not see any issue.

😎 ...and yes, I have also cleaned the glass, top and bottom.

so we are down to the formatter board it would seem. Can someone re-enforce this assumption before I go buy a new formatter board?

thanks

Common issue on these units are the motors, I would start with that for sure.

Funny question yet it relates, can you fax with this unit? They also tend to blow the fax board but usually they come up with a scanner error when this happens.

Last thing I think you can test is the ribbon cables, make sure they are 100%, not a issue i had on the 2727 but we get it on the newer models.

thanks for that...

I have a new step motor coming, will replace that first. Checking the ribbon is a good idea, I'll spend some time on that.  I have not try FAX, I'll put that on the bottom of the list as I don't have a need for FAX.

I'll post the results...

great, will be awaiting your reply

I could be off base here but I think the poster suggesting the motor is wrong. If the scanner initializes and moves during boot up, then the motor is working. I lean more towards the formatter which is responsible for commanding the scanner assembly to move and perform the scan function.

Don't get me wrong David it is still possible that the formatter is faulty, these units had huge issues with formatters, but the scanner motor is the cheaper place to start. A common issue on these units were actually the formatter board not turning of the scanner motor, they tend to overheat and burn.
