HP Laserjet P1102W faded print

Hi, my prints started coming out faded but only in certain areas. I bought a brand new Original toner and when I opened the sealed box the 'bubble' packed was slightly open, I thought it wouldnt matter and so installed the new toner, but the print is just the same. My question is, is the print quality dictated by the toner OR the actual printer? I dont know whether to buy a whole new printer OR to try another toner?? Any advice appreciated. The issue seems to be when I am printing grey text. So black text comes out fine, but grey text comes out faded but only in parts..... It used to work absolutely fine... Hi Ligg,

Firstly, remove the toner cartridge out of the printer and give it several shakes horizontally.

Reinstall it and see if this makes any difference.

If not, remove the toner cartridge again and inspect the interior of the printer if it has spilled toner in it.

If this is the case, there might be a chance that the laser's lenses got some toner and got dirty, thus printing faint.

If you can, clean that glass.

Hi Alex-TATS and many thanks for your reply... So I have tried shaking the cartridge several times but sadly no change.

I have had a look in the printer and there is no sign of any spilled toner.

Do you know if the grey scale of printing will be determined by the toner or the printer? I just dont know if its worth spending another £55 on another toner OR just buying a new printer for double that (with a new full toner)?

The printer is probably about 3 years old and according to the config page, has printed about 2500 pages....

What do you think??

The faint printing effect could be caused by either a toner or the printer itself.

Probably a printer technician can tell you if it is worth fixing it or not by having a close look at it.

Have you tried to increase the toner density to make it darker? Maybe this will do for you.

Hi Alex-TATS, when you say 'increase the toner density' do you mean just make the text darker in the application OR is there a printer setting somewhere? I have looked at all the printing options but cannot see anything?

I am not 100% sure, but most of the mono laser printers have this option.

Try connecting the printer to a LAN, let it get an ip address, and then go into its EWS by typing that address in a browser.

There, under the settings tab, search for a print quality option saying something like toner density.

Copmare two different toner cartridge you have

Print exactly the same paper/picture with these two toners 

If the same X-Y place faded exactly the same place same widith same height then it's the printer itself's problem

Otherwise you have two bad toners

Found it! Thanks Alex-TATS, it was in the HTML config.... but sadly it has made no difference. I have changed it to 1 power cycled gone back in and checked then printed, then done the same for 5 but both prints look exactly the same and both have fading.....

Thanks for all your help, but I think its new printer time.... I am not going to risk buying a new toner.... thanks again for all your help....

I have the same issue with my p1102w. I did find a solution that seems to work. 

1. Go to the control panel.

2. Right click on the printer. 

3. Select 'Printer Preferences'.

4. Under the Paper/Qualtiy tab, change Print Quality from FastRes 600 to FastRes 1200.

5. Select the 'Advanced' tab and then under that tab check the 'Print All Text as Black' check box.

6. Select 'Apply' and then 'OK'.

My print pages now print all the gray text as black and it is a whole lot easier to read!
