Laserjet Pro M12W
macOS 10.13 High Sierra

I have a new Laserjet Pro M12W connected  to a Mac with IOS 10.13.3

I have installed the drivers (_20160330)  succesfully and it works with the USB connection

I can open the Utility and the HTML Config. Through the menu added the SSID and the password. When I go to the tab to enable the wireless, it succesfuly added the printer and the blue light on the hardware is solid.

However, the printer utility tells me that the printer is not connected. When I go to the printer and show the log, I can see errors about permissions for the icon in /library/Printers/hp/icons, and many occurences of the error 'stopped with status 41' . The installer created the hp/icons directory so I am not sure why the issue is with permissions.

Very weirdly, the log shows events prior to me starting the printer for the first time. I purchased a brand new device and the box was sealed until I opened it.

Obviously I have tried downloading the utility from 123.hp.com to uninstall the printer but oddly it doesn't find my device. And as the standard advice will tell me once I post this, yes I have re-installed the drivers, yes I have tried turning it off and rebooting the Mac.... yes I have a good wireless network connection with strong signal..

Any ideas?

Thank you!

I am replying to my own post to add more info.... I succeeded in setting up ePrint, and I have sent an email to eprint which printed the attached file to th eprinter wirelessly, so I suspect the compatibility with IOS?

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out!

As I understand the printer isn't working on your Mac-OS,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Have you attempted to download the drivers from the Apple software?

While you respond to that, here's what you need to do:

Install the best available HP print driver and software on your Mac using Apple Software Update. Before installing the software, turn on the printer and make sure it is connected to the computer you want to print or scan from, either with a USB cable or through your local Wi-Fi or wired network.

   NOTE:

Since October 2016, HP printer software packages are no longer delivered through Apple Software Update. Visit 123.hp.com to download the latest HP software for your printer. Alternatively, if your printer supports Apple AirPrint, you do not need a driver to print from your Mac or iOS device. For more information, go to About AirPrint (in English).

Hi

Yes, the drivers are from the HP site, not Apple. I followed the instructions.

Note as I put in my original post

- I was able to enable the wireless functions through the print utility, the SSID and password are correctly set up.

- I have also set up ePrint and tested this function by sending and email to ePrint with an attachment. With the USB cable disconnected and wireless enabled, an ePrint email will be picked up by the printer and correctly printed. So I know my issue is not with the wireless connectivity

- I can print with the USB connection so I can eliminate connectivity for that route

- I wake up the printer by pressing power and once it goes through its tests, I get a solid green light (good to go) and the blue light is solid (wireless connected)

- However, on the printer utility (System preferences> printers) the printer shows on the list but shows as being offline. So if I select a Word doc and try to print, it is added to the print queue but the text says ‘The printer is not connected’

- I have downloaded the HP Utility Easy Start, then uninstalled and re-installed the driver. oddly Easy Start did not find the driver so I had to delete it manually from the library. The installer version (.dmg file) is dated 20160330 and was the latest one to download from the HP setup page.

Let me know what you would suggest and I’ll try it,

Thank you

@Mike_Garfield

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

The message 'offline' displays as the status for a printer or the message 'Printer not responding' displays when attempting to print.

Offline indicates that the Mac cannot communicate with the printer. The offline message displays when the printer is powered off, or a USB cable connection has become disconnected.

Figure : Printer status examples

Two devices showing offline and not responding

Step 1: Check connection between the printer and the Mac (connectivity)

Offline messages happen when the Mac cannot communicate with the printer. Select the type of connection you have, then follow the instructions to make sure the connection is working.

  • You have a USB printer connection
  • You have a network printer connection

Step 2: Reset the printer

Resetting power to the printer forces the printer to reset stored values in the firmware. A power reset can help when the printer is not accepting communication from the Mac.

  1. Make sure the printer is idle, not making any sounds, before continuing.

  2. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  4. Wait at least 60 seconds.

  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  7. If the printer does not turn on by itself, press the Power button  to turn it on.

  8. Try printing again and note what happens.

    • If the printer prints, you can stop troubleshooting.

    • If the print job becomes stuck again, continue to the next step.
