HP M479fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Recently bought this new M479fdw for my SOHO and am very happy with it but as there are multiple people using it from several devices I can see that it is using far more color toner than is necessary

Is there a way to have the printer itself default to black and white (grayscale) so that I don't have to constantly tell users to change the default settings on all of their devices which is quite impractical?

Please help, no amount of searching seems to solve my question as all the answers are related to settings on the devices/pcs

If you are only trying to reduce color, set the driver for each user as monochrome default only. On the PC, go to control panel >devices and printers and right click the icon for the printer and select printer properties and then print preferences. Go to the color tab and set to monochrome. Be sure to set for black toner only or greyscale will be printed using composite color. You can also check the embedded web server for the option to disable color completely. Higher end Enterprise products offer the option to limit color by application but not on Pro products.

Yes, this is the solution that comes up with searches but it does not solve the question

I don't think I should have to change the default settings on each PC or device when the printer is supposed to be suitable for multi-user environment

It seems it may be the only way to solve this might be to implement a print server which seems overkill for an 8 user environment

In my honest opinion if you have an 8 user environment you are severely hobbling productivity using this product. The correct product for this application would have been an M577 or M57540 (managed product). This would give you the enterprise level color controls you want. This product is really suitable to a 2 or 3 person application at most.
