Almost every time I print something, I get an "out of paper" error message even though the tray is full. Is there a "fix" for this? Perhaps software update or other means? Thanks a bunch!

Is this message on the printer or on your computer? If on the printer control panel it is possible that your paper sensor has failed, not an uncommon issue on this and the M402 series printers. The part number is RM2-5375-00cn. If the error is on your computer screen you should check the type of port your print driver is using. If it is using a WSD port you want to change it to use a Standard TCP/IP port. You can create a new port within the existing printer installation and apply it. You do not need to create a new printer instance.

A couple of possibilities here:
1. The paper type and/or size that is set in the printer is not the same type and/or size that the computer/program/printer driver is sending to the printer (i.e. the paper in the printer is letter size, but the type is card stock, etc... and the printer wants plain paper, or the paper size in the printer is custom and the computer wants letter). The printer and computer must be on the same page for the paper size and type.
2. Make sure the cassette paper tray paper size guides are set correctly. If they're too tight or loose, it can cause paper feed issues and think it's out of paper. Set the guides where they click into position for the paper size you're using.
