I upgraded to Windows 8 and want to install HP print and scan drivers for my Photosmart 7515e. However when I try, the wizard always wants to open the Catalyst Install Manager and reinstall that software. I don't understand why that should happen or why there may be a connection between printer drivers and CCC. Does anyone have an idea or answer? Thanks in advance.

I spoke with some colleagues of mine and one of them had something that you can both try.  JonW suggested that CCC might extract to a similar folder name as the HP software.  The way to get around this would be to access your temp folder, delete the contents, extract the printer's software again, cancel the install, access the temp folder again, rename the 7z folder, move the 7z folder to a different location, and run the setup.exe from the new location.  I'll piece the instructions out below in a bit more detail.  Give this a shot, and let me know what happens.

  1. Press the Windows key and type %temp%.
  2. Click on the Temp folder.
  3. Press Crtl + A to select all, or right-click and choose select all.
  4. Press Shift + Delete to completely delete the contents of the temp folder.  If a message comes up saying it can't delete a file because it is in use, skip that file.
  5. Run, or download and run , the install software again.
  6. Once the install finishes extracting and comes up to the first screen, cancel the install.
  7. Access the Temp folder again.
  8. Left-click on the 7z folder to select it.
  9. Right-click on the 7z folder and rename it.  I would suggest something like HP 7515 Drivers that way it is easy to find.
  10. Right-click on the 7z folder and select cut.
  11. Open a new directory and paste the file, or paste the file directly to the desktop.  You could even put the file on a flash/thumb/jump drive and run it from there.
  12. Open the folder.
  13. Look for the Setup.exe file and double-click it to run it.

Could you link the driver install download you're trying to use that's causing this problem?

Thank you very much for trying to help. I don't know how to link the driver install download, but the driver I am having difficulty with is PS7510_BASIC_X64_1315. It's for my Photosmart 7515e printer. If you can tell me how to link it so that it doesn't open with the AMD Catalyst Install Manager, that certainly may solve the installation issue.

It sounds like the default program used to open the printer's install software has changed. The only thing that would change how an exe file is opened would be a virus or some sort of malware. My advice would be to backup any data that you need, and then reinstall the OS. That should correct the miss-association that is causing the problem.

Thanks for your suggestions. I ran antivirus and antimalware scans, both in Windows and in safe mode. Nothing found. Backed up my important files and performed a Refresh operation through Windows 8 Recovery. Then tried again to install the Photosmart Basic Driver but it still opened with CCC. Everything else still works - all other exe and link files are not affected and I can still print. I just don't have scanning functionality. I then downloaded the Full Software Driver but that one, too, opened with CCC. The only other idea I have is to completely uninstall CCC with Revo Uninstaller, reboot and then see if the HP driver will install. Maybe tomorrow. Too many other things to do today. Happy New Year!

Happy New Year. That's really the last thing that I could think of trying as well. Let me know what happens with CCC uninstalled.

Well, I think I will yield. Uninstalled AMD Catalyst Control Center, rebooted and opened printer driver software. Up came CCC install Manager. Went through uninstall again and rebooted. Opened driver softwre - there was CCC again. Removed printer, rebooted into safe mode, opened driver - CCC once more.  Reinstalled AMD CCC and added back the printer. Same result. It's cursed. I think I am happy I can still print. Apparently I don't really need any other printer function. Thanks very much for trying.

No problem. I'm going to do some more research on this. If I find anything, I'll let you know.
