HP LaserJet 500 color M551

Have been having an issue with this printer for some time now. It prints horizontal banding around whatever text is sent to the device. It does this with color as well. Toners are all new. It did this with the previous toners that were installed as well.Scanned from a Xerox Multifunction Device-1.jpg

Well done! Great job jlegg!

This means that there is an issue with your formatter, because the engine test is fine.

I would recommend the following:

1) Download the latest firmware version in a USB flash thumbdrive (must be in FAT32 format and the file under root directory).

2) Power off and on the printer and when "1/8" appears in the operation panel touch the screen (if your printer has a touch panel) or press "X" button (if it doesn't have a touch panel). If done correctly and timely you will enter the pre-boot menu.

3) Go to Administration -> Format Disk and select OK

4) Insert the USB thumbdrive with the firmware in the front USB port. Go to Administration -> Download -> Download from USB Thumbdrive -> "the firmware file appears" and select OK.

5) After the firmware will have completed, go back and select Continue.

6) Let the printer boot until it boots to ready state (it may restart several times and will take a while)

7) Try print an internal page, like a configuration report page.

If the above does not solve the problem, then I am afraid that the formatter needs replacing.

I hope this will help,

Cheers!

Hi jlegg,

Try printing an engine test page. There must be a tiny hole in one of the printer's covers near the formatter (the board with the ports, usb, ethernet etc). Putting something thin enough through that hole and holding it for 5 seconds, would produce that engine test. Upload the result here again.

Cheers!

I was able to successfully upgrade the firmware. Printed a configuration page and it still printed with the horizontal banding. I have notified the people in charge of purchasing that we need a formatter board for this device, but I work for a school system and sometimes purchases like that move slow. I will post results when I get a replacement formatter board.

Well after finally replacing the formatter board just today, I am happy to say that the printer is working normally again, no more banding. Thank you for your help.
