Hi @GordonX,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I hear that you want to set the default paper tray for printing.

Kindly refer to the steps below:

Printer driver/software settings override the printer control panel settings. So if the printer keeps using Tray 1, first check the print driver on the computer and set Tray 2 as the default source there.

  • On some HP LaserJet printers, the tray behavior can also be changed from the printer control panel under Paper Handling Menu.

If your printer has a Paper Handling menu

You can check these settings on the printer control panel:

  • Set Tray 1 Mode:
    • FIRST = printer pulls from Tray 1 first if paper is loaded

    • CASSETTE = Tray 1 can be reserved for a specific size/type instead of always being used first

If your printer is suddenly defaulting to Tray 1, change Tray 1 Mode away from FIRST if available, and confirm Tray 2 has the correct paper size/type loaded in the control panel.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

I'm an HP Employee.
