Hi @Philsalmon,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thanks for the details. Since your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw can print successfully but cannot scan, the printer is communicating with the Mac, so I’d like to focus specifically on the scanning software and the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS).

The fact that you also cannot open the EWS is important, because the EWS is accessed through the printer’s network IP address. If the Mac cannot reach the printer’s EWS, that can also affect network-based scanning.

First, please check the printer's IP address
On the M283fdw, locate the printer's IP address from the network information/settings.

Then, on your Mac, open Safari or another web browser and enter the IP address directly into the address bar, for example: http://192.168.1.xxx

Do not enter the IP address into Google or another search engine. HP's EWS guidance specifically recommends entering the printer's IP address directly into the browser.

If the browser gives you a security/certificate warning, please let me know what message you receive. Depending on the EWS connection, a certificate warning can occur when accessing the printer's local web interface.

If the EWS still will not open
Please let me know:

  • What exact error message does Safari/your browser display when you enter the printer's IP address?
  • What is the printer's IP address
  • Is the Mac connected to the same Wi-Fi/network as the printer?
  • Is the printer connected by Wi-Fi or Ethernet
  • Can you print a Network Configuration/Network Summary page from the printer?
  • Does the IP address shown on that page match the IP address you are entering in the browser?
  • Can you scan directly from the printer's control panel, or does that also fail?

If possible, please upload a photo or screenshot of the EWS/browser error or the printer's Network Configuration page. That will allow me to see the network information and the exact error rather than having you repeat troubleshooting you've already performed.

Once we establish why the EWS cannot be reached, we can address the scanning side. For macOS, HP also supports scanning through the HP software, and the M283fdw can use its EWS for scan-related configuration.

Can print but cannot scan and cannot get to EWS.  Posting IP to browser gives no result. Firmware up to date.

Tried all those things and nothing works.  Typing IP into browser yields no results not even error message.  Think firm ware up to date.  What next please

Hi @Philsalmon,

Thank you for the update. Since you can print successfully but still cannot scan, and entering the printer IP address in the browser does not open the EWS, I’d like to narrow down exactly where the scan communication is failing.

Could you please confirm:

  • Which app are you currently using to scan? Is it the HP app, Windows Scan, or another scanning application?
  • When you try to scan, do you receive any error message or specific wording?
  • Does the printer appear as Ready/Connected in the HP app?
  • When you enter the printer's IP address in the browser, do you get a completely blank page, a timeout, or does the browser simply remain loading?

HP recommends using the HP app's Advanced Settings to access the EWS, and the computer and printer need to be on the same network.

If you are seeing an error message in the HP app or during scanning, please share a screenshot/photo of the error. This will help us identify the exact issue and determine the next HP-supported step.

Please send the exact error message and the app you are using, along with the screenshot if possible, and we'll take it from there.
