Just purchase a normal toner cartridge for it, there are no special changes or settings required. You could perform a cold reset if you want but not necessary.

Thanks, but I have put in a regular cartridge and it comes up saying to install a MICR cartridge.

Some printers have been modified with special hardware and firmware for special MICR printing. Has yours been modified?

Check the control panel options for anything that may allow changing from MICR to regular printing. Also, have you tried deleting and reinstalling your printer driver on your computer? Sometimes the driver will be setup to use MICR specifically and look for the cartridge when printing certain jobs.

As suggested, there might be some hardware installed. Remove the right side panel to expose the formatter. Check for any USB sticks that may be installed to the internal USB ports. Remove any you find and then perform a cold reset on the printer. Then download the current firmware from support.hp.com and install.

Thanks to all who sent suggestions. Found I had a Troy enhanced printer and in the end a factory reset finally did the trick.
