HP Color LaserJet MFP M477fnw
Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

I was getting print jobs in the middle of the night that said:

GET / HTTP/1.1

Host: (my local IP:9100

Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate

Accept: */* | Connection: keep-alive

User=Agent: python-requests/2.9.1.

That would be followed by three pages with machine language at the top and mostly blank pages.

I assume that these print jobs were coming in from outside my home network as some kind of port 9100 exploit. Could that be?

I also disabled HP ePrint and all Web Services.

My questions for the forum are: Will that stop these mysterious middle of the night print jobs? And is there a downside to disabling 9100 printing?

Hi,

I understand you want to know about disabling TPC/IP port 9100. I did some research and found a support document that shows the recommended security settings for HP Printers.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03687861

It shows in the document in the network options to disable port 9100.

It should not affect your ability to print to the printer.

I would also suggest you verify the firmware is current.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-color-laserjet-pro-mfp-m477-series/7326560/model...

It has a link to the HP LaserJet Pro Series Mac Firmware Update Utility.

Please let us know if you need further assistance.
